Check the engine harness where it passes by the EGR valve. My bet is there is a problem there and when the engine torques over it is opening up a fried wire.

Melted wiring harness on the EGR - Toyota wants $500 to repair (and re-route so it won't happen again). Guess that's better than $2k for a new harness and install

Thanks guys -

Does anyone else think this is spooky? I know Dan works his voodoo on us on the mud board, but now he's reaching out to friends too?

You don't seriously think he came up with the correct diagnosis just off the top of his head do you? I have a gut feeling that he moved the harness there...caused it to wear, then threw out the diagnosis at the most opportune time...

This dude is seriously creeping me out...

I will continue to purchase all parts from him so I can stay on his good side...no bad ju ju for me...

Is this a common problem? Is there a design flaw that wiring harness rerouting is recommended? Could someone please fill me in here  ?

It's not the first time I've heard of this happening, and for this kind of cash I need to do something to prevent it from happening to me.

What specifically can you get to wrap the wiring harness in to prevent this from eventually happening?

Thanks,

I use some high temp heat tape we get from a local speed shop. I usually doupble wrap it so it has twice as much to heat through before it melts. Then tywrap it to the holder next to the valve cover. This holder has a plastic bit that holds the wiring harness away from the EGR tube, but with time it becomes brittle and allow the wiring harness to get too close to the pipe. Usually you can open the harness up and do a repair on the harness that is jsut fine, the close it all back up. later robbie

Are we talking about the huge bunch of wires that are in total about 1.5" think that comes out near the passenger side?

Yup. I used AL tape to wrap mine plus the plastic wire loom shield. No problems. I found it before the wires were burned through. One wire had the insulation removed in a small spot.
