On the way home from work Friday morning my truck started running rough. Sunday and Monday I replaced all tune up items and she is still running bad. If you unplug 3&4 plugs it runs the same, rough. So from talking with a mechanic friend it sounds like I may have a blown HG btw the cyls. Talking with another guy today about it and poss of him doing the repair.

I am debating cost an viability of doing only that repair on a 200k+ 22re vs. Another 22re vs. A 3rz or other swap.

Any idea on costs of each and or time frame to get it done and shop recommendations? Does ACC do this kind of stuff?

Need to know ASAP so I can make a decision as this is my work transportation.

I thought a HG repair on a 22RE is about the easiest one to do. Are you not capable to do it yourself? If it were mine, I believe I would pull it first and inspect the damage myself before making a decision. If the cylinders and walls look good, why not just rebuild the head and move on.

However, if the coolant has not been properly maintained during it's 200k mile life, you might just start chasing problem after problem. Like freeze plugs, water pumps, etc.

Tough decision, but I would definitely take a peak first.

Have you run a compression test? I'd do that first, and check coolant level/mixture, and oil level/mixture. I'm sure you could replace a HG - heck, I'll give you a hand.

I'm sure ACC would do this, but you have to get the truck to them first.

22RE is a very easy HG replacement. Will also need to have that aluminum head checked. BTW, if you have 200k on the truck, plan on doing a timing chain/gear swap unless they look perfect. You'll have to take it off to do the HG replacement.

The problem with the 22R's are that they are so easy to work on that you want to do more while you're in there and you'd probably be looking for headers, cams, etc. There's a lot of potential for this motor, it only takes money...

I just did a compression test, havent used the gauge before and I got 105, 100, 95, 90. Put oil in #2 and got 135 but then my gauge quit building pressure. I cranked the engine over till I counted to 8 each time.

I was reading on pirate about putting air in through the sparkplug hole to see if you have a headgasket or other leak, anyone ever done this before?

From what I can tell my compression should be in the 180-200 psi range??

Thanks for any help. Steve can you PM me your #? I may try to call on my way to work tonight.

I have been down this road before.

First find out if the head gasket is toast. If you end up pulling the head and the coolant passages are shot just move on to a different motor.

Easiest would be to swap a good running 22RE in there. The more expensive and time consuming would be to put a 2 or 3RZ in there. They will net you better mileage and much much more power. I cruise about 85mph on the highway and get in the low 20s in my 2RZ powered 83 Hilux.

Or throw a 1.9VW TDI or 2.0 TDI (my next motor) and run bio-fuels and push out 35mpg...

Now is the time to ask... Do you have extra time for a different motor swap? Do you want MPGS? Do you want performance? Do you want a little of Both?

I forgot to add cost...

I spent about 2.5K on my 2004 2RZ swap. Motor had 18K, clutch, wiring, sensors, exhaust, computer. Was it worth it? Yes it sure was, the truck is quite, fast, reliable, and gets great MPGS. You could end up getting a rolled truck and saving some money plus they made the 2/3RZ from 1996 to 2004. Started with distributor'ed RZ's to coil on plug...

Prob about 2k-3K on the TDI swap, Motor, wiring, computer, bellhousing adapter (ACME), exahaust, etc etc... But they are easily tunable to put out a ton of power with great MPGS. The next motor I am looking into is the 2.0 TDI that they started to make in 2003 they put out 240FT-LBS in the stock form. It would not take much at all to be hiting 300FT-LBs while still getting 35mpgs...

Just food for thought... But now is the time to be thinking.

throttle body was not open, I am going to try and get another compression gauge from orielly or advance and see if I can dig into it tomorrow, 4 day weekend so hopefully I will be able to figure something out. Going to recheck everything and firing order, spark, etc.

Not sure Ill make it to the Annual.

Lowtide,

How do I know if the waterjackets are toast and are you talking on the head or the block?

Ill see if I can look into those options more and see. 35mpg sounds great and I think I may be able to swing those prices, but I have seen some of your builds and not sure I can handle something that in depth. What is a realistic time frame to do one of those swaps 3rz or 2.0 tdi? I am sure I can get some help with a build day or two amongst UC guys to knock out stuff. Time is an issue, but who knows what I may be able to work out.

Hop on it! That's a great Toyota Engine!

Wiring is about the most time consuming part of it. The rest is mostly grunt work and fabricating a few brackets. I normally get caught up in cleaning, repainting, restoring stuff to anal degree that it takes a bunch of time.

But if you were not that anal about it, pulling the engine and getting the 2-3rz in there isnt that bad. Figuring out the wiring is, sat thru a couple DVDs while wiring on the couch a few nights.

Have not done the TDI swap yet. Some of the older ones have less wiring and are much easier to wire. The new ones are drive by wire and some funky ignition stuff.

Let me know if you need any help I am not on here every day anymore but I check it weekly.

Ok I got another compression gauge and made sure it was warmed up and tb was open and all plugs were out.

190 across the board dry.
With oil ~190, 205, 230, 230.

Looks like 4 is firing but 3 is not at the plug.
