Hello all,

I have a 1976 FJ40. A rock recently went through my passenger front roll up window and now I am faced with installing the glass.

(Thankfully) I sourced a used passenger window today with the bottom door glass channel in tact. (this is the channel that attaches the glass to the regulator)

Here is my question. Can the glass be installed without removing the window channel or window felts?
(I briefly attempted to install the glass without removing the felt or the channel and did not want to push my luck.)

If the channels and felt MUST be removed can anyone explain exactly which items need to be removed to successfully insert the glass into the door? (as well as how to remove them) I am asking because I looked online the the replacement felt and channel are $170. (If there is any way I can successfully reuse these part I want to)

If anyone has successfully reused these items please explain how.

Thank you for reading. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

channel can stay, not sure about the felts...all depends if the grip fits through it. check with the one from the broken window.

You shouldn't need to remove the felts, but as noted in the linked thread, the lower rear track has to be unbolted and removed to allow the window to pivot.

Thank you very much for your help Brian.

I've gotten one end of the wide portion of "grip" through the felt but couldn't figure out how to position the glass once I started feeding it into the door.

Are the felts easily removable / replaceable? If so I feel like I might have the perfect amount of wiggle room. How are the felts removed? (intact) .

Thank you again.

Hi SpotCruiser,

Are you referring to this step in the linked instructions?

"6 mm bolt underneath the door latch assembly in the end of the door, I think it's a phillips or a 10 mm socket, can't remember. Needless to say, remove that. Reach inside and remove the rear window track you just un-bolted. You kinda have to pull it down because it's in a track at the top"

If not.... are you saying the metal channel attached to the bottom of the glass needs to be removed?

Thank you very much for your help and for your reply.

Yep, there's a bolt, near the latch mechanism of the door, that holds the lower rear window track in place. You have to remove that bolt and pull out the lower rear window track out. Removal of the track allows the window to be rotated toward the rear of the door for installation. The track is #62 and the bolt is #72 in this SOR diagram:

WOW. This was hugely helpful.

Thank you VERY much for taking the time to post this diagram.

I can't tell you how excited I am to remove the plastic that is covering my door!

A warm thank you to everyone who replied.

If hey go together like early doors, the brush strip and rubber wiper strip on either side of the slot at the top of the door are held in by small spring clips that pop through holes in the door panel.
I expect that the clips, felts and metal retaining strips are still be available from Toyota.
I bought a set about a year ago. Get-em new if you can. They are not terribly expensive.

The glass should fit through the slot with the wiper strips in place but it may be a tight squeeze.

If you find it necessary to do it the other way around, that is possible too.
You can work on installing the wipers with the glass in place but will need to take out the "L" shaped bracket with rubber stop that is inside the door.
Removing the bracket allows the top edge of the glass to drop below the level of the felts so you can access the clips.

Again this is for early doors.
