Hi everyone,

I have a 1969 FJ40, 4 cylinder original engine with 3 gear transmission. When I drive the vehicle, at 25mph, I'm already in the 3rs gear and my max speed is 35mph. I feel the car doesn't want to go faster than 40mph. I feel my car doesn't run "free" and something is preventing it to go faster. Initially the differential lock was on on the front wheels, so I turned it off and and it got A LOT better. Is this normal? I'm not sure what is normal since I don't have anything else to compare it to.

Thank yoy for your input

WTF….this cannot be a coincidence. Troll?

The FJ40 never had a 4 cylinder engine. If you actually have an imported BJ40 with a diesel, then, yep... 4 cylinder

Your max speed is not 35mph. Unless you are in low range.

Unless a PO installed some sort of selectable locker(s), you do not have differential lock "on the front wheels'. Perhaps you are refering to the locking hubs? Neither these or a differential lock will affect your top speed.

You need to clarify what you actually mean when you say that you "feel" that your rig does not "want" to go faster. As well as what you mean by "run free".

Sorry, correction.... my engine is inline 6 cylinder.

When I drive the vehicle, at 35 MPH, my RPM sounds really high, and I'm afraid to push the car to go faster. When I say, I feel my car doesn't run free, I mean something is preventing me to go faster that 35mph. And yes, you are correct, the locking hub was on and I turned it off and it got slightly better

Seems like we may have the same issue

Should have said this right at the start.

So... when your foot is on the floor the rig stops accelerating on flat ground at 35 mph? or is it 40 MPH?

Are you in high range?

The acceleration stop around 35-40mph.

The high/low lever handle does not work so I'm not sure if I'm is high or low?

You think that may be the problem?

Sorry, I'm not very tech savvy

Yes, that very much may be the problem. If you are in low range, the engine rpm that moves you at 40 mph... would be moving you at 92 mph in high range.

Determine if you are in high or low range before bothering to chase any more geese up any other trees. ;)

Thank you for the advice. I'll try that.

In High, the lever handle should be push in towards the engine?

Yes.

Mark, don't be gentle - it is an FJ40. Push the ball at the end of the lever with a slight downward motion as you push it toward the firewall. Mine once got stuck in the neutral position and I thought my clutch had gone out. A little jiggle sometimes help if the connecting levers/rods are not properly aligned.
