Thread seemed the ideal place to pose this question:

Is an aluminum (16400-17300) HZJ79 radiator sufficient to cool a a 1HD-T?

Before answering, consider that choosing the 16400-17300 aluminum leaves $800 towards potential intercooler, considering the expense of 17300 versus 17360, specific hoses and shroud....and that's before adding freight from Japan, since none of the HDJ79 is purchasable in the US.

Edited: I have 17300 bought new for a fraction of OE, so closer to $1-1.1k additional for HDJ79 specific.

Here a pic of the top tank numbers.View attachment 1031294

Could you check the rest of the numbers please ?
This is mine 06/ 99 HZJ75 (now HDJ)Troopy.

I compared it with 2 x 2011 and a 2013 HZJ78 and they are the same

The part number ends in 1740 and according to Toyodiy that radiator get the same longer bottom radiator hose ?
Does this mean I got the longer radiator from the start ?

Ok guys... little feedback from my side.
After having LOTS of overheating and radiator leaking problems I did take the risk to have bring me a new radiator from Europe to Argentina and smuggle it through the customs. It worked all fine and it was fitted within about 1hour!
Bought it from All American Imports. Comes as a complete bolt on kit with new extra long shroud, longer bottom hose, rubbers on brackets, deeper bottom plastic cover and radiator cap. Price 489EUR. All original Toyota. But they don't want to tell the part number. Not sure why it's so secret, but I respect that.

I installed it on my 1993 HZJ75, although it's made for a HZJ7/79. Everything fit just perfect, except the overflow tank bracket I need to change.
The radiator is much taller than the HZJ78 and also taller than my old crappy australian brass 4 row radiator.

I just drove on flat roads so far, no pass yet! Hope to be able to test it soon and see how much better it cools down! So far the needled stayed at 72degrees on small hills! But this was not a problem before either. (see other overheating thread for 1HZ I made lately)

I took some pictures and measurements:

Old radiator: the core is about 6cm thick
New radiator: the core is about 5.5cm thick, about 0.5cm thinner than old one

Old radiator: the core is 51x50cm in size
New radiator: the core is 51x56cm in size, that's about 12% increase in surface

Old radiator: has 43 vertical bars/rows or how you call them
New radiator: has 59 vertical bars&rows and they are thinner than on the old one

Old radiator: ribs are regular
New radiator: ribs are super fine, looks like they would have much more surface than the brass radiator ribs!

Some pictures...

My old HZJ75 4 row brass radiator vs. the new one. Tanks are less tall on new one but the whole radiator is about 6cm taller.

This picture they sent me. It's the standart HZJ78 vs. their taller radiator:

That's how the old ribs looked like on my brass radiator:

And this are the new ones. Very fine!

A picture from top, did fit perfect:

Hi Blade. Hi everyone. I know the thread was back in 2015 but figured i would send you a msg. I have a 75 series troopy with a 1hdt and came across your forum upon looking for radiators to solve the heat issue. I sourced the larger radiator that you installed from austrailia but for the life of me i cant find the radiator shroud. Which one did you use and do you have the part number or steer me in the right direction. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

This should be the fan shroud PN that matches the larger radiator: 1671117151 it's available from Partsouq:

You will also need a different lower radiator hose for the larger radiator, also available from PS:
