You may have mentioned this before, have you addressed the fan clutch, with recalibrating to engage sooner?

I can tell you upgrading the air box was one of the most noticeable mods I've done, in terms of performance. I cannot speak to its effects on overall temps, as I did not compare post and pre. Improvements were mainly in how fast and effortlessly the turbo spooled. With very noticeable improvement in low end power and drivability. So I highly recommend pursuing this mod for anyone with a turbo application. I did a write up on my version using a GM v8 air box, I'll try to dig it up and post a link.
I have, it’s got a quikazz fan and clutch upgrade which did help. Though now that I have a larger fan possibility I may swap that out in the future.

I did see your write up! I have another little part number plan I’ll be sure to share as it comes together 😬

Definitely not 60mm of clearance there unfortunately.

230°F is up there for sure. What's your factory gauge indicating at that point? Slightly over the (not marked) halfway point? 110°C doesn't leave a lot of room but if that is your max max under testing then you'll likely not encounter that in real world conditions? Hopefully? Remind me: what was your max temp before? Or was it same but under less harsh conditions? And how was your EGT feeling about all this water temp attention ?

I'm curious about airbox results for sure! Haven't hooked up my widenose snorkel to the system yet and will need to modify anyway so why not improve?

Paving the way as usual! We appreciate it!
My garage is just below red mark at that point. I have hit as high as 235 in the past but that’s my max that I will pull over and rev to benefit back down.

The main thing with this test result was being able to maintain some creature comforts and drivability. Almost every climb before id not have AC or end up turning on heat and rolling windows down to try and help with the engine temps.

I’m hopeful that easier flowing air with an air box and cooler air from the snorkel will be good improvements. I feel like after it’s done a hot drive, if I stop and try to start it really feels powerless and I’d bet my intake are to the turbo is toasty.

Good info. Thank you!

Driving in the summer with the heat on really hits home. Even pulled my AC belt so I wouldn't be tempted on the last trip.

Custom airbox and snorkel should help. Tor’s airbox with Duramax filter helped mine for sure. But I went from a K&N so a stack of wet napkins would have been an improvement.

Curious where other stock gauges are too. 225* F and my needle is touching the red on the stock gauge. Haven’t let it hit 230. Checking against an Auber sensor in the upper radiator hose.
I have my gauge in the upper rad hose, I have noticed my gauge ground is goofy and I have a new sensor to install. If my fan is on it reads higher and I can watch it drop if I turn off major electrical devices…

Okay, sounds like we are apples to apples. My probe is also in the URH. I've yet to see more than 215 (before I turboed) and now 210 a couple of times when pushed (had a/c on too but ambient temp was only around 18°C at the time) ... 210 is just below half on my factory gauge (with new OEM sender) but I also haven't touched the fuel post install at 13psi max so I'm definitely making less power...

@Guyute you pulled the a/c belt to save you from yourself? Talk about being self aware. Nice work man! 😂

While I think about it, any thoughts on the lower skid plate (the one near the front)? Mine never went back in place after the arb but I wonder if it has any bearing on air flow? Or is the lower part of the shroud negating it?

What is the larger fan you are looking at?

Maybe I need to just turn down my max fuel screw, but when I let off my gas pedal it’s tough to keep going, I have long steep grades on i70 ha. What turbo are you running?

I’ve wondered about that, I’ve not put mine back in either, but now I have part of the radiator that hangs lower so I’m like air blowing by down there would be good 🤣

I might put mine on? I'm running the OG metal shroud but if nothing else then at least I'll have more protection?

I'm running an old 1hdt CT26 and all the factory bits that would allow it to fit, along with a Simpson manifold adapter, and a 2.5 inch side exit exhaust. My fuel trim was very lean even before I put the turbo in ( zero smoke except on the worst hills) but now? EGTs only reach 650°F or so at the top of a climb. Otherwise they are around 500 or less. Before I could easily touch 1250 on a hill if I didn't back off. Obviously no fuel added means no real HP gains, but my goal was altitude compensation and driveability, so I guess I've achieved that much?

But back to your thread... I like the idea of air filter gains!

Dang that is great! Maybe I should just dial it back a bit and see how it goes. I’m very clean on my exhaust(which was one of my main goals) but much hotter. With the IC now I keep my peak around 800-900, but once things slow down on a grade and heat soak it rises to 1000. I have a newer FTE ct26, peak about 14-15psi

I keep wanting to give the fuel screw a "tickle" but am trying to hold myself back. More testing first. 13psi max from my old/used snail. 😉 (My numbers are from the upper dump.)

But dude... now that you've felt real power, can you actually put that genie back in the bottle?
I can’t!! It drives almost like a modern truck now!!

I think the only way you MIGHT be able to pull that trailer over the passes effortlessly is with a 1HDFTE. The 1HZ is just not designed to pull all that weight at high speeds. You can certainly crawl with it but will never be able to keep up with the 4 Runners and Tacomas.

Hello,

x2.

The 1HZ engine was not designed for American roads.

It can crawl all day long and if it ever breaks down, a tree shadow and basic tools are all you need to fix it, but it cannot keep up with more powerful engines.

For the past 30 years every 1HZ powered 7x with a turbo and big tires you will see driving around in Europe with a 1cm spacer between the hood hinges and the hood . This way excessive heat finds it way out . Even on my KZJ73 I did this and no problems running 80 mph on 33’s . It might look funny to most people here but it is cheap and effective

How about just get rid of the hood altogether? That should coool it down.

Now that's USA style as seen on Roadkill many times ;)

You can all make fun of it but I was hauling a 1HZ/H55 on my trailer today behind the little KZJ73 cruising at 75 mph on my gps with my temps normal and no worries .

It should also be said... Coolest utility trailer ever!

What do you use? Washers? Would love to see front on. That used to be the go to for my buddies with jeep grand cherokees...

It varies , sometimes it’s washers while other times I have made a spacer or used big nuts 😉

Hard to see in pics

Trailer is the bestest way to get a NA 1HZ up to 75 MPH
