I have looked and can't find any info on this.

Is anyone familiar with the differences between the front heater core from pre 8/96 and post 8/96?

They are different part numbers and the pre 8/96 version is no longer available (as far as I can find).

Is the post 8/96 version usable in a pre 8/96 cruiser?

Thanks!
Greg

Do a search (upper RH corner) and search for : Heater Core from Member beno. You will get all the info you need.

I see Beto’s response there, but in that case the owner was using an aftermarket core from what I can tell. There are other strings that say that the air box has to be swapped for a post 8/96. So conflicting info.

I was hoping someone with firsthand knowledge of putting a factory post 8/96 heater core in a pre 8/96 cruiser.

Bumping this old thread. I'm actually planning a dash replacement on my 80. I've slowly overhauled all the vitals on my rig, but I'm more than likely running the OG heater core. I figured this would be a good while you're in there item.

Anyone know if the pipes that are mentioned are needed when replacing the heater core with the one (87107-60270) that's still available? Any other solutions?

I'd like to just leave this alone until there's a problem, but my luck is that I will have a problem the minute I get the new dash installed! Hahaha.

Why do you want to replace the heater core? It is rebuildable to like new condition, if it is leaking. If it's not leaking, it just needs to be cleaned, at most.

I'm just over the top with my preventative maintenance and since my entire dash is coming out I just don't want to have any issues in the future.

As of right now my entire cooling system has been overhauled, flushed and working great with the exception of my original heater core and rear heater.

Is it only a matter of time before these heater cores leak or is it usually due to poor maintenance that causes them to leak?

Heat cycles are the bane of soldered joints. They all fail eventually; the parent metal expands as it heats and contracts as it cools, solder doesn't. They could be brazed which would make them immune to heat cycles, but then you couldn't disassemble them to clean them and repair/replace damages.

Any good radiator shop can clean it, leak test it and recommend whether you shoud have it resoldered or not. I understand your concern about aged parts, I'm the same way. I would have no reservations whatever about taking the course of action I described for my DD.

Duly noted and appreciated! Thanks!!

Just to be clear though the pipes mentioned in the thread above that are NLA, what does one do if they need to replace those?

The pipes are discontinued.

Nothing to add to this thread other than rebuild your original one if possible.

But @OGBeno I don't think I can get Beto out of my head when I think of you now

Replace them. They're just pipes. the engine side may have beads on them, I can't remember offhand. Anyone can roll a bead on a tube.
