Any takers?

I've been thinking about getting one of those webasto heaters. One of my customer is a webasto reseller and he got me a price i couldn't pass.

For those that do not know, a webasto is a small heating unit that heat up your engine coolant. There are diesel and gasoline model. It is small, like 10''x4''x5''. You can even have a remote controler to start the thing up before getting out.!

Heating coolant is nice but without the cabine ventilation running it is not super nice. So i just did a test and you simply need to bypass the Ignition #2 relay and get current to the cigar fuse and VOILA! the climate control will operate!

The webasto thermo top C as a output signal that will come alive when the coolant is up to preset temperature. I will use this to trigger a relay that will get current to the ignition #2 relay and the cigar fuse.

So i guess in the coming weeks i'll keep this thread alive with a webasto install on a Serie 100 landcruiser!

Webasto - Thermo Top C for Trucks

Just install one of these: :)

Why not run the engine?
That's what it's for.

The 2UZ-FE comes up to temperature quickly,
even at -30 degrees in Alaska.

Just get an auto start, and start the truck about 15 minutes before you get in.
Leave the heated seats on. It'll be toasty in there.

What am I missing here?
(besides a snugggie)

2UZ-FE burns 0.5GPH. Webasto burns 0.1 GPH, If you're off camping you don't want to burn through the fuel needed to get home keeping the rig warm.

This seems like a weird way to go camping.
But to each his own... maybe that's how they do it in Canada.

I would recommend one of these instead:

Will you get the one that also heats water and so could heat water for showering or washing up?

Running the engine is more expensive, on a diesel idling, it take at least a hour to see the temp needle move when temperature on lower then 20 deg F. I could run the viscous heater on the diesel, but it make the engine rev around 1400 rpm...

- I'm not going to leave a key transponder in the truck for a remote start. Not even sure a remote start would work on my truck.

- I live in Canada, did i mentionned that?

- Webasto will be usefull on camping tripp

The webasto can heat water or coolant. I guess it depends how you hook it up. But my purpose here is to prevent half a hour of idling at 1400rpm every morning.!

Sorry. I didn't know yours was diesel.
Does it really take an hour to heat up from +20 degrees F? :hhmm:

I have been starting my 2UZFE (gas) at below zero degrees F, using a remote start, every morining for the last 2 weeks with no problems. Mine takes 10-15 minutes of idling to heat up... but I bet yours has alot more torque :)

Post pictures when you get the auxillary heater installed. now I am curious...

A diesel will normally never heat up when idling. Instead it goes cold if the temperature is well below freezing. Too fuel efficient when idling.

When starting an engine at -20 C, it wears like driving 20 km, at least, during the first 5 seconds. Plus that the fuel consumption is much higher with a cold engine.

Simply put: If you live in a "wintery" area, you need some kind of additional heater.

Around here, most up-market diesel vehicles are delivered with Webasto or Eberspracher from factory.

I suppose a device like this could be very useful to the Diesel crowd, or to the gasser folks who roll out the air mattress on top of their second row/drawers and sleep in the rig during cold season camping trips.

Not personally my cup 'o tea (not yet at least since I'm not a hardcore wheeler OR camper, lol), but a neat device nonetheless.

Where on the truck do you install this heater?
Where does the exhaust go?
