Headers

I put MAF's 6 into 1 header on my '68 FJ40 back in 1977. Fit was poor. Different flange thicknesses required making half moon washers to tighten it up. But, it lasted 25 years before it rusted out. (It did end up warping a bit, and took 2 gaskets to seal.)
I replaced it with SOR's 2 piece header in 2002. Much better fit, flanges the same thickness as the intake, and it may be less likely to warp because the flange is two pieces instead of one. Still needed 2 gaskets to get a good seal.
As for performance gains, the header DID make a difference. On a long uphill grade in western Maryland I drove frequently, my 3 speed couldn't pull 40 mph in 3rd gear, so I had to drop down to 2nd and do it at 35. Long haul...With the headers, I could pull the hill in 3rd at 45 mph.
I put in the fluid heatriser last winter. Hard to say how much it might have helped. It was 15 below zero a lot this winter, and long warmups were necessary to make the defroster work. I don't know if the heatriser actually helped, but it made me feel better knowing I tried.

I have the Man-a-fre 6 to 1 and it was a pain trying to get it to seal. It will take you some time puting it on and off but i think it is worth the money to get the two piece. I would recommend 2 gaskets though.

Thing I don't like about the MAF 6 into 1: notorious tendency to get a leak inside the honeycomb that is the collector, where you can't get to it to weld it.

Thing I don't like about the $OR header is the long collector that leaves you with two pipes underneath the clutch. If and or when you need to service the clutch, the pressure plate and flywheel WILL NOT come out until you remove the exhaust!

Downey's Tri-Y has neither of these problems.

If you don't want to spend the $242 they have posted on their website, I've got a NIB for $199.

Also got a used $OR I was gonna put on Ebay next week.

Thanks again for all the replys guys.

I might be interested on those tri-y's 65swb45...let me take a look-see on the site so I know what i'm getting myself into.

I gotta take some pics of the underbelly of my 40 and post them when I can and learn how to put them on the forum.

I almost put headers on my F engine, but was talked out of it. And by who? $OR themselves (poor sales pressure there). I was under the impression that for HP, headers are great, but by just decreasing backpressure you may actually lose some of your low end torque. Kind of opposite of what a cruiser is intended for. I may be wrong, but the tech at SOR is pretty decent. However, I had a 350 a while back that was slightly built but had stock manifolds. Some guy up the road had a pair of doug thorley headers for $25 at a garage sale. Those made a gargantuous difference, never warped or ever needed to be retorqued. Downey has the best reputation. And MAF, well, has anyone ever heard anything good about their tin foil headers?
