(short rant) spent most of Sat removing all the 'stuff' to pull head;
it 'aint off yet !
Had to go to tool store & get a diferet 19mm socket (12pt)
'Stymeid' , dang bolt 'behind' engine lift hook (by firewall) is hard to get rotational 'swing room': 6pt socket doesn't doo it- there's little room 'above' for gizmos ( extentions , u-joint, etc)

The good news, however, , besides the new socket, I've spruced up my tan !
(bright sunny day, mid to hi 80's ! )

QUESTION:
When replacing head, anyone out there Not Reinstalling that lift hook ?

I too battled that damn bolt and wondered the same thing. I wound up keeping it there when I reinstalled though. It wasn't easy but I did even manage to get my torque wrench on that bolt.

Good luck!

X2 Leave it off.

OTAY,

I'm gitten ready to tangled with the summabitch....

2 of 3 said "not reinstalled" - bastids gonna be outtahere !

First, gotta put on sun-block....

Merry Christmas to all,,,,

Thanks

When I went to pull the engine out of my 40, that lack of a rear hook was a real pain. Clearly some PO had the same problem you are and just left it off. My recommendation based on that-try to reinstall it.

Don't know how your going about this but it's way easier to do all that with the hood removed .

Yeah, when I replaced my head for some reason I never considered taking the hood off. It wasn't until reinstalling we removed the hood. Helluva lot easier to get in there!

Strangly, My lift hook is in front and not near the firewall.... Is this evidence of the PO ghetto-fying more stuff on my truck..

I just pulled my head today. I pulled the left fender and left tire off, and It makes the job 100% better! It was a 3FE and I bet I saved 3 hours pulling the tire and fender.

There are two hooks stock, your's, like mine and most others was removed to Facilitate Other Maintenance.

I have pulled a few 2F's using without a rear hook using the intake/exhaust manifold, not too bad.....

X2 on what Dave-T said. I wasn't aware therr was supposed to be any hooks here at all.

Head is off . . .

I plan on not reinstalling engine lift hooks; I'll store 'em with the other cruiser stuff. If I ever decide to do engine swap, can reinstall hooks - they don't need 'ultra tight.

As for removing hood: I didn't. Long strap from hood latch-loop over top of truck to rear bumper; unbolt & swing out of way the lift arms....not too much spring action when hood is open wide.

Head lift: a foot of 'uni strut' , using 14mm rocker bolts to 2 'middle' locations of rocker mount.
another longer piece of uni-strut running left right - a bolt where they cross. A neighbor on one side , me on the other, heave ho , , ,
Install plan: use a longer bolt, a longer 'cross' wise uni-strut. Position head over block & use nut on longer bolt to lower head in place. May take longer than 'strong arming', but us 60 year olds don't strong arm much of anything anymore :-)
