Well, all those hours down the drain, started ran fine for a few minutes then poooof.

Even had a diesel mechanic come over and check the amount of pitting on the block, he gave me the thumbs up and said to said with a flat block.

White smoke..........................

Makes me want to cry.

sorry to hear of your troubles,

was the head flat? this pitting was it on the top of the block? could it be milled off? how long was it run with a badd HG?

And to think I was going to complain that I just cleaned my window contacts and my windows are still slow!

Reminds me of one of my dad's favorite sayings: I complained because I had no shoes, until I saw a man who had no feet.

Bummer on your head gasket. I feel for you...take a break if you can and re-group before going back at it.

The head was flat, the pitting is on the block behind No.6 piston at the back.

Flat block and emery cloth for quite some time and hit seemed good to go???

Oh well sometimes we need to learn the hard way.

I can only imagine what it feels like after the amount of work it takes to replace a HG. Does this mean the block comes out or are their ways to mill/machine the block in situ??

How long would it take to heat up a pile of water if it were in the exhaust system, enough to evaperate it all???

My buddy just got off work from Independant Diesel and he was surprised to hear the gasket would of failed.

He had me pull a plug wire on No.6 which was the cyclinder which had failed previously. The steam continued to come out of the tail pipe, with some dripping of water off the end of the tailpipe.

Prolly a real long shot.\

Thanks Doug for feeling my pain, might be a beer or two on the horrizon.

Could you please elaborate on this?

The exhaust could be loaded with antifreeze and it can take some time to get it worked out.

Noted Dan, it basically came to a halt after fully loading up No.6 cylinder, in fact the oil was a sludgy light brown. This is how I recieved the truck, not running on the back of a flat bed.

Its kinda of strange, after about a hour it seemed to be pushing less white smoke(steam) out the exhaust.

When you bring the revs up to around 2000 it almost clears up completely, runs reall smooth also.

No coolant loss or air in gain in the coolant.

I idled the truck for a hour as the front end is apart.

I will finish the front end rebuild and take it out for a run tomorrow.

Any ideas from the information given??

When I first started my Cruiser after the HG replacement my heart sank with the sight of smoke coming from the exhaust. I jumped in and decided to take it for a drive down the street. A huge cloud of white smoke followed me. After about 5 or 10 minutes .......poof, the smoke dissapeared for good.

*edit* - I feel your pain. Good luck.

I'd give it a go. It's fairly common for condensation to build up in the metal while sitting in a cool garage, much less the whole previous gasket failure that led to the mixing to begin with. As long as compression remains high, fluids aren't mixing, and the smoke disappates after warmup, you're looking pretty good. Best of luck. Keep us up to date. It kills me to think of the work it takes to build an engine just to tear the head off again for a $20 gasket failure.

What signs are there for a blown head gasket? Does it affect the idle at all?

Travis

Not at all????

More like $100 gasket.

I didn't have any steam after the rebuild, but the original HG was intact. I did have the new exhaust donuts making a nasty smell though.

Rob.......this isn't your green 94 is it? sounds like its someone elses.....

Same one John, it did have 258K though and you gotta expect it to go sometime.

It sounds like the exhaust is loaded with coolant from the inital failure.

258K nice! Rob my "new to me" rolled Green 94' is puffing the white smoke and draining H2o out the tail pipe as well. 162K on this one.

 So you don’t feel alone… the PHH on my Green 93' just blew as well! Two 80's and both are down with the top two notaries aliments. Fun stuff in Metal-tech land!

Did you have the head inspected as well? Aluminum heads will crack between the valves and these cracks can go deep enough to hit a coolant passage. I hope this isn't the case but thought I would ask.

Head not checked.

New problem, will not rev past 2000, almost like a governor is coming on???
