Back to OT..........I had a second-gen Impala SS a few years ago, and the Impala SS site had a VERY comprehensive FAQ section. Though a section like that won't take care of ALL questions, it was, by far, the most informative automotive site of which I've been a part........If everyone here would post a link to a post every time a frequently asked question came up, not only would it be a great reference site, it would educate newbies - like me - without having to wait until a question arose to bug everyone here......Furthermore, though I know there is a FAQ section here, it could be much more "well populated"...........just a thought

Oh yeah, thanks for the valuable information and patience as I learn about both my new acquisition AND how to operate the confounded search engine! :D

As Super-Sport Impalas are GM products, there is a much greater exposure to failures and broken bits. :D

Before you pour gas all over me and strike a match I think it fair to mention that I spent quite some time as a parts manager at a big Chevy store and I saw, first hand, all of the failures built in to GM vehicles.

Well dan you can cover chebbies and I will atest to the intersting things that fail on a F@rd.

Thanks to all for the help "searching". I have always had trouble searching on this site, tho I've never let that keep me from posting questions I couldn't find. Seems the HG is a hot topic with all 80 owners, and is clearly something not everyone is up for tackling themselves. I'll buy an 80, but won't let the HG thing keep me from doing it.

As daugnting of a task that it might semm it wasn't all that bad. My biggest concern was a failure out on the road where the cost of repair would escalate sharply. My other comcern was warping the head from a complete failure. So I elected to replace it as a PM repair. It would have been a casual 3 day job hadn't I bumped the timing chain and broke a slipper. Even then it gave me the oportunity to repair that slight oil pan leak. All in all I'm pleased to have put that repair behind me.

For anyone who is just buying the vehicle and still might have alternate means of travel I'd recommend doing it as a PM especially if the vehicle is tied into your leisure activities where a failure hits a little harder than a mere inconvenience.
