Head Gasket replaced, Life is Good

Well I finally got my Head Gasket replaced and the 80 is back on the road. I got a little carried away with PM while I had it apart but I figure I shouldn't have to mess with the engine except oil for 150k or so. She is running so smooth.

For those hesitant to take this kind of issue on it is not that bad if you plan ahead and order all the parts before it blows the down time is not that bad. I didn't so mine was down a couple weeks.

Secondly this forum of ours is perfect to share knowledge and support our fellow SoCal 80's members. If you take your time, mark & tag all parts and reference the FSM you will be fine. Also IdahoDoug's DVD is a great help.

How about a PM get together? I don't remember who first suggested that but credit where it is due. Pick a topic and we can get all interested parties together for some wrenching and 's. Good excuse to do all that stuff you have been puting off. Eduardo.... Suggestions? PHH, Starter contacts, HG, Birf's, What do you guys think?

Brent, Thanks again for stopping by, it was truly appreciated. Now if we could just get yours clean. Honestly, if I hadn't just worked on it, it would be almost as bad as yours.




Everyone, How about a less intensive first PM get together? We could do starter contacts/alternator brushes/PHH's for anyone who needs one or more of the above. Projects that won't take forever if we do multiple peoples rigs. I am totally open to any other PM ideas. I figure once we get one under our belt we can try for birfs or an emergency HG should the need arise. Good excuse to get together since it looks like it will be awhile before most of us can get out to wheel again. What do you all think?

As far as location, we could use my place if we are working on 3 rigs max at one time. Even that would probably be pushing it but hey somebody has to volunteer. If anyone has more space (like a driveway) and wants a bunch of 80's torn apart there speak up.

I say we can do a few starters,phh, and belts. I can bring tools, air or regular I even have extra hose for the phh if anybody needs it. Lets meet at Mo's house and knock these things out. Whats a good time/date for people.

Depends on the day but sure. As long as you remove the battery and tray!

Some on mud say it can be done with the battery in place, but i assure you, i wont be doing it unless both the battery and tray are both removed!

Dont even try to convince me otherwise!

Nope - have a new OEM set from Dan I've had for 'spares' on the Anza and DV trips. When I took the stuff out of my truck when Yota stripped my oil drain plug, I was talking the the mechanic w/o the service writer around (get a better idea of what really is going on that way) and he mentioned that the belts were starting to show some wear and suggested replacing them before too long.

Figure the new belts can go on and I can keep the old ones as 'spares' for expeditions.

I haven't had any starter or alternator trouble, but as long as we're getting together, might as well do those too.

Mine is at the tire shop today, but not for tires, yet. I snapped two, count 'em TWO wheel studs on the D/S rear while changing to my spare last night. That couldn't have gone much worse!

Still waiting for the tax refund to get tires.

BTW, the OME heavies I got from Mangler are sweet, and the LX still drives perfectly without any caster correction.

I'll get off my lazy ass and post pics soon.

I snapped two, count 'em TWO wheel studs on the D/S rear while changing to my spare last night. That couldn't have gone much worse!

I can assure you that the studs were probably stretched/weakened from the 600lb gorilla that put them on the last time. My air gun couldnt even get these things off. Dont recall the last time i needed a breaker bar to remove lug nuts!

Might be a safe bet to replace all of them while your in there man! Each one of those nuts was a bitch to get off!

Glad the springs worked out! Told ya it was easy!!

I also love my new springs! Glad to see someone local got my old ones!

I honestly don't mind doing the phh for someone else . After doing two with my bootleg tools I am sure it will be easy with real tools. Especially if someone wants to help me w/ my head gasket. Btw...I changed my belts recently and did not find the need to remove the battery or the tray (I do have long skinny arms though )
