I blew my head gasket a year ago and rather than pay someone a bunch of money to rebuild my engine, I opted to find a cheap replacement motor that I swapped in. Well, I finally popped the head off my original motor today and found all parts to be within specification, including the bores which have virtually no wear after 157K miles!! The gasket failed adjacent to the #6 cylinder, (furthest back) the top of that piston is really nice and polished, it looks like it was steam cleaned. My question is, did Toyota make an upgraded head gasket that is more reliable than the OEM part, or is there a better aftermarket part that I can install to prevent this failure in the future?? Any input would be greatly appreciated and I'll try to attach photo's of this do-it yourself project for others who might want to tackle this.

My understanding is that the replacement OEM head gasket is a improvement on the original..., more heavily reinforced around the cylinder head. Contact C'dan. He'll be able to give you more definitive information on the replacement OEM gasket.

Ditto. The new version has not had any failures AFAIK. At least none reported here.

You can try www.cometic.com and see if you like what their headgaskets can do.

Been down that road... got one of the design guys on the phone last year, I think his name was Jeff. He appeared to have some interest... got the prelim. info together and sent it to Cometic via fax. Never heard from Cometic again... left a voice mail or two. Suppose they are busy and with what would have been very limited production, well, limited stuff dosn't keep the doors open. :D
