I give up but Im guessing those with wear are caused by bad lubricaton or sustained high rpm rather than high mileage.

They seem to be too uneven for high miles, just a hunch:D

you could be right with that assumtion

After the contest is over, it would be interesting know how many of those miles were with North American oil and how many were with Japanese oil. I wonder how much merit there is to the theory that different additives in the Japanese oil reduce the problem with the 1HD-T BEBs while the lack of those additives in North American and Oz oils contribute to the problem?

That was fun Wayne, like these great posts.

Best of the new year.

i was trying to do 2 things. i wanted it to be fun (i was hoping for more guesses though) and to educational as well.
the 54,000 was the HZ engine in the white truck i sold and after all the abuse even with thousand of miles of propane injection the bearings still had lots of life left in them.
the actual wear in the remaining ones was negligable. these all came from the JDM units that came in over the last year. it iwll be interesting as the years pass and more and more of the bearings get changed out to see a comparision.
no matter what the results i will still chnage out all the BEB on the HDJ81s that i bring in.
when i looked at them i had a hard time figuring which ones had 58,000 and the one with 155,000.
cheers

Missed out...Finally have some time to catch up here. Good guess Eric!

As you say, it's hard to tell from mileage. I think it is very wise to continue offering this service to your customers Wayne. Wheither it is the high sodium spec'd oils in Japan that have assisted with this issue, or not, now that they are in North America...it is best to have them with ACL's I believe. Strange wear, as you noted a while ago, and flaked bearings that I have seen, and heard about from other sources also confirms for me it is wise to continue changing them out.

i am sorry but i am missing the question here...
if you mean of HDJ81 cruisers after they have ran the NA oil through them? personally i have not seen any and i doubt that any of the ones that have come in have seen enough km to tell whether or not the oil here is the concern.
what a person would have to do is remove the BEB, take pics and specs, reinstall and run NA oil then every 100,000 km pull them back out and check for undo wear and at the same time have a running track record of a HDT that is running on the same oil used in Japan...
is this what you mean?
