I have a 1990 hdj81. Originally I was hoping to refresh my fuel filter cap and the heater that goes with it, as I'm pretty sure I have a slight air leak from there.

However, I can't seem to find the heater (23910-17020) available anywhere. Is this a lost cause?
Is there a way to refresh my existing fuel heater, block off the port, or is it best to switch to the cap assembly without the heater?
 
23910-17060. That's the part number for a HDJ100. AFAIK , the filtration and heat element appears to be the same. But no guarantees.

The 80 series elements 23910-17020 & 23910-17040 appear to be out of production.

The 100 series element 23910-17060 appears very similar but has a very short lead and the white plastic around the element is more open and the outer case is different where the wires enter.

The 78 series element 23910-17080 is similar to the 100 series element but has a longer lead.

Lots of aftermarket ways to heat fuel.
 
I can report, that the heating elements fitted to the 100 series (23910-17060) and 78/79 series (23910-17080) do not fit the 80 series pump/filter head.
The screw holes do not line up and the element is either too tall or not oriented correctly as the outer case does not sit flush with the body of the pump/filter head, forcing it to sit flush compresses the spring suggesting the element is fouling on something.

Best bet maybe to fit the entire filter unit from a 100 series, i.e pump/filter head (23380-17381), matching element (23910-17060) and filter (23390-64480),
The 100 series filter would be required as the matting surface of the filter head is flat with a recess built into the filter whereas the 80 series filter head has the recess with a flat filter mating surface thus fitting an 80 series filter onto a 100 series filter head could restrict fuel flow.

If the filter housing is just sucking in air, replace the o-rings.

I just replaced the o-ring in mine when it was leaking. But I ordered a housing without the heater as I have no use for it where I live so I'll be pulling it shortly.
 
I have now have brand new filter/pump heads with heaters from both an 80 series and 100 series Diesel engine.

The mounting holes for the head have the same C-C, the hand pump diaphragms appear to be the same diameter (measured externally) both have 12mm fuel inlet barbs but the 80 series has a 10mm outlet barb and the fuel outlets are 90degrees out.

The heater mounting on both have the same dimensions but are clocked differently.

The 80 series uses an M5 screw whereas the 100 series uses an M4 screw.

I made a 100 series heater element fit an 80 series pump/filter head by removing the plastic clips that hold the metal cap on to the element assembly and then rotating till the screw holes line up.

Just a FYI

the pipes are just pressed in and inside there is an O-RING on the pipe you can easily swap out the pipes. For the heater element, you can also swap connectors.
as you can see I pulled of the pipe on my old one to put on the new one.
