Hi all, first time poster here looking for some advice/thoughts. Its long story but theres been a fair bit to this.
Purchased my 2004 HDJ100 5sp man in July 2020, which is currently out of action until its taken to a local diesel specialist in a week.
Firstly, the prev owner said he had barely driven it for about 6 months as he had moved onto a LC200 due to upgrading/wanting an auto. Needless to say, the car ran great for the ~30min test drive.
After the purchase, car ran well for approx the first 4-6 weeks, then started to develop a kind of misfire/stutter intermittently. I had a busy few weeks around this time and I had only now changed the oil & oil/air/fuel filters. I was feeling as though the issue was just dirty/old fuel or fuel filter and with time would hopefully clear up. This was my dream car after all with a legendary reputation, so I kinda didnt want to know that there was any major issue going on. Naive maybe. The issue persisted but now also started to have intermittent engine shut offs, with check engine & battery lights (worrying). It would generally crank over though and run okay again. On a whim I dropped the main tank, drained and cleaned it out (but it wasnt considerably bad) and changed another fuel filter. Issue persisted but not badly enough to immediately take it to a shop for that issue alone as it seemed to go away for days/weeks at a time, then return. Also through this time (months apart tho) I had to replace the alternator & AC compressor as they both let go and $$ was starting to add up and getting tight. During the AC replacement, i asked the mechanic to run an OBD check which showed P1215 EDU circuit fault. This was the most telling sign so far, and steered me away from thinking it was a dirty fuel/filter related issue. I should mention that early on as part of a general dual battery install/electrical tidy up I had re-earth bonded the EDU/Spill valve controller bracket to the body with 2.5mm2 wire to a tapped thread on the wheel arch, and a m8 thread into the body, doubled up with a new 4awg negative cable directly to the main battery. Apparently these controllers needed clean earthing and as a mining equip sparky, I can all but assure this was done properly. I have proceeded to inspect and clean the inj pump plugs and 4pin Edu plug thoroughly twice now, with the issue persisting on & off.
Then last week, as the summer heat finally started to kick in (35-40C+) driving to work & back for 3 days it started to consistently run badly, stuttering and shutting off. The last of it was a 20 min drive home where on the freeway I was in & out of the emergency lane 5-10 times, just trying to limp it home. Although now it had begun to not crank over happily and just shut off immediately or within a couple of seconds. A few more attempts before resigning to calling for a tow truck, and now cranking would create a plume of white-grey smoke and smell of unburnt/raw diesel as if massively overfuelling(?), while engine sputtering/shaking and rev surging. Almost like totally unregulated fuel delivery. Again very hot day, engine bay was hot, I could barely touch the EDU it was that hot. (although in Aus these kind of days are normal and would expect functional parts to be able to handle this) Sadly, got it towed home and that's where its been since. Upon arriving home with time to cool down a little, cranking it over once more had the same result.

Overall the only behaviour patterns I could point to:
- hot weather (although cooling down didnt seem to resolve it)
- my regular route home is about 10 mins of freeway (110-120kmph), then an exit with banked traffic, with a red light and a right turn. quite consistently the car would shut off when taking this slowish right hand corner, almost like the stopping in traffic after a bit of constant speed & high revs of the freeway was causing it. happened enough times to half expect it to occur daily
-a couple of times over the months there was moments where a sudden jolt in the road (potholes etc) seemed to cause a shut off.

Im unsure whether to think this could be completely caused by a faulty EDU, which although costly for a new one, is an easy plugnplay. Or could it be the spill valve itself, wiring or fouled/broken plugs, or other injector pump internal failure? Feeling as though some symptoms arent necessarily consistent with each other. Has anyone else experienced anything similar with the 1HDFTE? Again sorry for the novel, theres just a few angles to this. Cheers, JP93

When the FTE pump starts to go bad, usually it starts exhibiting the symptoms when hot. Often pouring a bucket or two of cold water over it will make it run well for a while, until hot again. Usually it's the SCV valve.
You are lucky that you are in Australia and there is a diesel mechanic that knows the 1HD-FTE every 50km or so :)

Hey JP, I have just started to experience the exact same issues in the last few weeks; did you happen to find out what was causing the problems?

Cheers, Archie
