Same compressor in North America. Don't source one from Japan. I'll wager a guess that Toyota used the same one on a number of engines world-wide.
What exactly went wrong? Maybe you don't need to replace the whole compressor...
I fried my magnetic clutch a few days ago because the pulley bearing was toast and the pulley was rubbing against the electromagnet until it actually exposed part of the windings and then the whole thing shorted out. I pulled it apart last night and am looking for a new clutch assembly and will replace the pulley bearing and that should be all I need. The system is still sealed and the actual compressor feels normal when I turn the shaft.
Lots of fun driving down the highway in 30C+ heat, having your gauge fuse blow, losing pretty much all interior electrical stuff including climate controls and the ability to lower your windows!
