What are most using as recovery points after mounting an ARB bullbar as it covers the frame holes for the OEM hooks? I’ve found ideas in a couple threads with now defunct links to parts used in these threads. I know the hi-lift eye is not a safe option. Ideas?

Old threads:

I just use the ARB tow hook points. I havent had any issues with them and had to roll my truck off its roof with it. Just be careful loading them to the side since its thinner metal. Ive also towed an 80 out by putting an axle strap/tree saver around the actual round tubing on the side of the bumper for lateral pulls with a winch.

I’m still running my OE loops, did ARB change the bumper brackets or forget to drill your holes on the underside?

I didn’t drill any holes. Wouldn’t that reduce the threading into the frame with the recovery hook bolts (due to thickness of the ARB tubing) and reduce strength?

Mine was installed somewhere around ‘02-‘03, when I worked around gr9 bolts aplenty - if they were too short Iwould have changed them, but I didn’t (will 2x that in daylight).

Sheering is the bigger issue if you went longer with cheaper grade bolts.

Are we talking about the same thing? My ARB has two strap/shackle attachment points on the front where it mounts to the two frame rails. Its an old ARB Classic.

The 2 spots that look like they welded a washer to double the metal?
If so, those are for a ARB interface for a Hi-Lift. Nothing more.

Used Trail Tailor’s tow points underneath my ARB bumper. Work great.

Got the idea from another mudder.

huh. Thats really good to know. I am not planning on rolling my 80 again but next time I will try a different approach :D

I can’t take full credit despite seeing mine & never thinking they were stout - this is @george_tlc ’s post from the 1st thread linked by OP / post ~#9 —linked to support what us old farts learned:

^ The front tabs/holes on the ARB are definitely NOT recovery points. They mate with ARB's hi-lift jack adapter. Trying to use those tabs as recovery points would be a very bad idea...

cheers,
george.

Also — 2nd Gen Tundra tow eyes mount 100% to the 80 frame.
They are a giant hoop that is even more stout. I can say that from experience, would post a pic but IDK how under new forum software - I can’t even find my own pic albums with shots of my 80 ARB setup.

Help me help you guys, I’m an idiot on this new software. I’d upload a Tundra loop on my setup if I knew how. :meh:

trail tailor makes a great set of hooks

This.

Don't use the ARB points for recovery!

I just installed an ARB a couple of months ago. The lower frame mounting bolts where the perfect length to re-install my factory(and IMO) much stouter recovery points. I would never use the factory ARB recovery points. They look kinda thin. They could definitely bend with some side load

Thanks E,

As others have stated, there are no recovery points on an ARB bumper. Those points are for a highlift (at best). Use either the stock hardware, Tundra hardware, or aftermarket. I had the stock ones so I used those.

I just installed my ARB last weekend. The OEM tow hooks mount in the same position. The bumper should have two bolts on top and bottom.

Can anyone describe or post a pic of how the ARB-provided recovery point spacers work with the ARB bullbar and OEM tow hooks? Do they just go between the tow hook and bottom of the bullbar? Wouldn’t this add leverage to the bolts going into the frame holding on the hooks, making the stock recovery bolts less effective?

Correct. Between the bar and hook. That's in the case of aftermarket or OEM points IIRC.
