Does anybody on the forum repair/rebuild hazard light switches? Mine does some weird things with the blinkers. Works, doesn't work, wiggle and the blinkers don't work. Wiggle again the blinkers work. Trying to avoid buying a new one. Thanks, Ben.

Hey Matt, sorry for the reply to an old thread, but I was wondering what a broken pull stock is and what it causes. My hazard switch on my 1973 FJ40 was working for hazards but my blinkers were not working. I took my switch apart and everything looks good but a tiny piece of broken plastic fell out. I think it was what kept the pull lever from spinning because now mine just spins around and now the switch doesn’t work at all. No hazards or anything.- I have Fully Restored switches
- I have NOS switches
- I have both with or without a NOS or a Restored Knob
- sounds like you have a broken or partially Pull Stalk in the Phonic Sliding Box , common issue![]()
Any response from @ToyotaMatt ? I have a 1981 and have some issues with my wipers moving slowly as well as my Hazzard light switch. Thanks, I'll give it go. What's the worst that can happen, I'll just have to buy a new switch. Thanks for the tips on DIY, much appreciated.I've been dealing with similar gremlins on my 79 that had been sitting for years and abused before that.
What I have found is any bad connection (dirty, corroded, caked with old grease) can cause intermittent or slow operation of that circuit.
Almost all of my switches I have taken apart, cleaned and reassembled using dielectric grease. Lots of small, spring-loaded parts so observe how everything fits and don't lose any bits in the process. And easy with the housing tabs so you don't break them.
Wiper motor slowness can be attributed to any poor contact in the circuit, including the switch, wiring connectors and contacts in the motor assembly itself. Not a hard job to take it apart, clean lube and reassemble.
Also, check to make sure you have good grounds on whatever circuit you're working on. A corroded or missing ground can create similar symptoms.
Anyway, if you're up for the challenge and don't need new, DIY has worked for me.
