Uhg.

In as much as Mr. Freeze (David) is a great tech and did great work on my a/c (greatly), I need to save a $ when I can, so when I started having starter trouble I bought the Haynes Repair Manual and referred to that. Yeah. Right. Looking at the exploded diagram in the Haynes manual, you would think the starter would practically jump right off just by asking it to. I can hardly fit my hands in there. According to Fig. 17.5, "Remove the top bolt from the starter assembly" - I had to worm my hand in with a small digital camera and take about 10 to 15 pictures just to finally discover where the freakin' top bolt was!!! Ooooo, and it says in step 3 to remove the cruise control assembly from the engine compartment, and to help with that it refers me to Chapter 12, so I look at chapter 12 and after much digging I finally find section 22 which basically tells what a cruise control does, then that some features are beyond the scope of this manual, how to check the fuse, brake lights and look at the cable for damage, and something about test driving; as to removal, not a clue.

And the above was my "abbreviated version" without expetives (for those of you old enough to recall the Nixon Transcripts...).

OK, is the Chilton or some other version a little more detailed, or by the time I buy all these manuals am I going to figure out that I should have just sent her to the shop???

Oh, in case you might be wondering, sometimes when we try to start it we just hear a click. Give it one or two more trys and she starts fine. I am guessing a failing starter solenoid or connection within the relay mechanism in the housing.

get the FSM. it will tell you all you need to know. do a search on here for it, that is how i found the number. a little pricey, but well worth the investment.

X2. The extra couple bucks is more than worth the quality of information contained in the FSM.

Yeah the others are just a waste of $$ and a headache.

The only useful thing with the Chilton or Haynes is some of the pictures. Outside of that, the FSMs have much better detail. I originally had the Haynes for my 40, but now that I have the FSMs, it collects dust in the garage

How much pricey???

If CDan doesn't chime in with a price, stop in or call your local dealership. I got all my FSMs for my 40 there.

You can download the FSMs in chunks here also:meh:

I'll be ordering the FSMs for my 91 next week, I'll let you know how much.

I called the # CDan posted & bought my Lexus FSM manuals (cheaper than posted on fleabay).

Elec Wiring Diagrams $48.50
Main FSM $96.48
+ tax + $18 shipping
I imagined the gal was wearing a bikini, PRICELESS!

Take a gander at autozone.com they have instructions & diagrams once you register your auto. Diagram for belt routing superior to FSM's (?).

did I post that again? Deja Vu!

Weird, huh?

Too many people don't realize that most Toyota manuals (going back to at least 1980) are still readily available.

one of these is better for a reason.
teh haynes, that is not quite 1" thick, covers fj60s, fj62s, fj80s and the fzj80.
the toyota book covers 1993 fzj80s. it's right around $100 bucks.
