So I started pulling things apart because there’s the ac blows room temp. I figured there was a leak. Pulled the hoses… no refrigerant what so ever. Pulled the condenser… no oil in it at all. The grand daddy of them all…. The evaporator. Check this thing out.

This is the first time going beyond just topping off 134, but new evaporator, expansion valve, pressure switch and compressor. The only thing I haven’t wanted to change is the condenser because I’m not sure if it’s still available.

Wow I have seen some bad evaporators. I clicked on this thinking I was going to one up.

This one that’s the cake. Not even sure how it had air flow out the vents

That evaporator is HORRIBLE

I have condensor kits coming but they are going to be a bit - I'd recommend getting your original cleaned/tested at a radiator shop.

That’s over 30 years of dirty dirty New Orleans haha.

Na the previous owner put it up in 2011 and it hadn’t been on the road.

Yes, that's actually a real issue. 10% bleach or Lysol best you can.
Fabuloso works well, too. As glutaraldehyde is a strong viricide, but stuff is NASTY on your lungs

Damn, now I’m paranoid. Do I have to take the dash apart too before I’m finished putting my truck back together??? 😒 What the hell, might as well…

I would just wear a Respirator or N95 mask and liberally spray Lysol in all ducts, leave for a few hours, then wipe best you can. Ducts can be removed and washed even with dash in place. Lysol is effective against Hantavirus, which is the main thing to worry about with rodent dropping, saliva, urine, etc. It's far more prevalent in the Southwest, but not unheard of in the North or Southeast.

That's why I let the neighborhood stray cats recreate in my back yard. Haven't seen a rodent since.

I’ve been catching them in the pantry in the winter. They dug out a hole in the wall and I plugged it with spray foam. I don’t think they’re in my truck, but it’s 40 years old now. I’m have a “new” evaporator on hand. I know the dash is a headache but I might as well do it now while everything else is apart. Just be done with it.

I would definitely remove the dash if you have time/energy. You will find all kinds of 40 year old mayhem under there, and you'll be able to re-seal the ducts and re-fasten the harness, check and clean grounds and especially the large white bulk ground connector near the steering column that almost certainly could use a good dose of deoxit or other contact cleaner, then a little dielectric grease...

It's actually surprisingly easy to remove and replace the dash, just takes a rubber spine. :D

That evaporator is THE worst I've ever seen. Looks like it's been laying next to the Titanic for a hundred years.
Rock Auto- Four Seasons brand. $68 .
