I've had a 86 FJ60 for a few years now and, I have had a continual problem with my windshield wipers. They tend to smear. I've changed them at least 3 times. Is it the 60's windshield or cheap wipers? Any one else experience this?

Welcome to the forum!

Your in Seattle. It rains all the time and wears the wipers out quicker.

Did I meet you last night at the cruiserheads? Get that stereo workin yet?

Are you changing just the rubber wiper or the whole arm. If not try replacing the whole arm. It could be that the springs are worn out or the arms are bent. I've had good luck using rainx or a similar product. It makes the water bead up, and the drops roll off.

My experience is that rain wipes clean, and road spray smears like a *^#$. The useful life of a wiper rubber seams to be less than a year on my truck.

Hi there .. another trick is to clean the windscreen with scrunched up newspaper. This will make the water bead as it removes the tar and scale from the windscreen giving you a crystal clear windsreen. This works great for mirrors too. cheers :)

Tired springs in the arms reduce effectiveness. Replaced the arms, OEM, and with new blades the fix has made a significant difference. Rain-X-the windshield as well, and I think you'll be even more satisfied.

dude this is no s***. clean your windshield with some spotx and then if you can get your hands on some aquapel from the local glass shop and treat it you will not believe the difference. the glass shop will also treat for you if you would rather pay them.

Thanks for the replies-

Let me re-word my original question.

Does your cruiser burn through wiper blades faster than your other vehicles?

i put bosch blades on mine about 18 mos ago and they work great. hell, they even swing over and try to clean my fenders and cowl vent occassionally.

I use snow blades (Utah, obvious) they are cheap and they don't load up with snow or any other sort of debris like mud, insects or tree junk. When they start to deteriorate, I spend $10 on a new pair, but thaey seem to be going for a couple of years.

Another thing to do is every time you wash your rig, use a sponge with Bon Ami on the windshield, then the regular wash n' mitt to get the extra Bon Ami off after you rinse it. Doesn't hurt the glass and pulls the road grime off really well. I've done it for years.

Are you having problems with NEW wipers, or as they are on there awhile? May want to try cleaning the blades really well too. Not just the windshield. Hope this helps.

Rain-X is denatured alcohol, a lot cheaper to buy as that than as repackaged and labeled rain-x,,,,

x2 on the new oem springs/arms

Question: Do you take your cruiser through car washes that wax as well? They usually wax the whole vehicle... could it be due to this?

I used to be a big supporter of rain-x, and it does work great, but I've had the exact same results by just throwing a coat of wax on the windshield. Wax gets the dirt, bugs, tar off and it lets the water bead up -- just like off the body. We have crap weather here in Chicago and I've never had any fogging or haze more than the usual with wax. And it's cheap. Also, take an alcohol wipe and clean the rubber blades on the wipers every so often. Yeah, yeah, I know rubber degrades the blades.... but lets face it, they're rubber and are only effective for so long anyway. When you clean all the crap off them they regain their smooth edge and are more effective until they completely wear out.

I just replaced the arms and put on rain-x blades on the 60 and put a coat of rain-x on and i rairly use wipers if i am moving.
