I lifted the front tires off the ground and spun only one tire and they both spun.. how do I verify to get the locker unlocked to hear the ratchet sound?
Get the wheels spinning in one direction and then jerk one wheel hard the other way. That should result in an obvious clack-clack-clack sound. If that doesn't work, then try lifting only one wheel up, and then rock it back and forth as hard as possible to get the lock to release.

when u lift the front wheels, with hubs locked, try holding one wheel and spin the other, it should make a clicking noise if it works fine.

I'm experiencing the same issue and have attributed it to the locker loading up and preventing the tires from turning at different speeds. I upgraded to a saginaw this past winter and the situation has improved, but is still less than ideal. My theory is that the cure is a hydro assist ram.

Rick, do you have hydro assist?

Locking the front with any sort of traction makes it very difficult to steer.

Sounds like that's the original poster's problem.

Try the same test only unlock 1 hub. If it steers well, you've found the problem.

You can cure it with a selectable <cough> ARB <cough> locker, IMHO a much better solution than Hydro assist which can lead to other problems like bent steering components and mangled steering arms. Based on what I've read here and other places I don't think a stock FJ40 axle is able to take the stress from Hydro assist and/or tires bigger than 37".

IMOP hydro assist don't solve by itself any of those problems .. talking about smoth nice and easy steering with taller meats ..

It's alwas and almost all matter of pump .. and how capable it is ..

It happen to me after each good mud trip down here, when I was using my front ARB and my 37" chained I end the trip without power steering ..

I jump into hydro assist but that does not solve any problem, an actually was even worse coz my old pump wasn't capable to move the assist as the speed that you will need for normal city or HW driving .. ..

Maybe it's a combination but after an upgraded pump, hydro assist, rebuild box I got nice and smooth power steering no matter how hard I play .. ( my pump still whine when the fluid is hot as recall that I'm pushing good effort on the system )

Lifted front wheels off the ground and tried to get one of the wheels to ratchet, spun both ways tried to stop and start quikly ,tried with one wheel on the ground, no ratchet... It almost feels like it was welded. I also put it in 4 wd and locked hubs and tried to turn back and forth and forward on dry pavement to maybe loosen the locker , no go.. but realized that the steering worked great going to the right but bound up trying to go to the left about 3/4 of the way??? any other thoughts? Im going to remove axles and pull the third out this week to get to the botoom of it. or at least know what I have for locker (lincoln or lockright). thanks Capt.

Howdy! With the steering bnding mostly in only on direction, I would try to track that down by putting it back up on stands and the removing one item at a time. Like, pull off the pitman arm first, and then cycle the steering lock to lock. If that's OK, then cycle the wheels stop to stop, first with the hubs unlocked, and then locked, so you can pin point the cause. Problem could be in the steering box, knuckle, suspension, etc. If not, then tear into the diff. John

So today I decided to tear down the front end to see whats up with the locker , 1hr later I have the 3rd down and inspected , It looks like I have a shear pin that was broken and binding up the locker from releasing, going to talk to powertrax tech and see what they recomend . Heres the pict, the pin on the right is sheared and bent over locking the gears

Looks like it turned the locker into a spool. That makes turning a lot harder than an autolocker.
how are your birfs looking?

The lonfields that I put in a few months ago still look great ,,, didnt put but a few miles on in 4wd.

the four holes that the shear pins go into are oblong, so im going to order a new locker. Should i stick with a lockright or try an aussie??? thanks Rick

Come to find out after removal, all of the shear pins were broken and all the holes were oblong, I talked to powertrax today to get part #s for the locker i have and they said I have a very old one and the parts not guaranteed to mate up with what I have, Typical....So I called jds offroad in Danbury CT. and for a lock right delivered to the door was $335, wish i could have spent the extra on a Detroit but funds are limited ,, Hope this solves my steering issue, wheeling this weekend was biatch

If it's not too late to change the order, you may want to spend the extra $$ for a Powertrax No Slip. It is basically a LockRight with a syncro? mechinism in the center that allows it to lock and unlock easier than a regular LockRight. That's what I switched over to, and I can definitely feel the difference. I am constantly steering around on hard rock, so it's nice to have it release better. Just an option. John

Well put the new locker in , put the third back in , put the axles back in, put the hubs back on, put the tires back on with no problems and still having the same issue. steering still hard to steer to the left, I think Im going to change out the steering box next... can I get this at the junk yard or order one new or rebuilt one online, thanks for all the input,, Capt.

Did you ever cycle the steering from lock to lock while it was up on stands, expecially with the pitman off? John

Yea, the locker being frozen up, so to speak, may of caused a lot of wear/damage in the box.
