Hello

I was given a Chicago Electric (Harbor Freight Tools) Oxy-Acetylene torch set for Christmas. I am looking for a 'scarfing' tip for this torch -I am going to use this torch set to cut off some brackers, spring perches, etc from my FJ40's axles for a spring over.

I checked HFtools web site for some additional tips. Can I use another manufacturers tips, like Radnor, or Victor or are these tips special?

thanks!

OK. I found this out.

The tips this torch uses are Victor clones.
I took the torch to the local Welding supply store and we compared the tip to a victor tip. Same thing.
The tips actually have the same part number stamped in it as the Victor branded tips.

The LWS told me that they were suprised to see how good this torch was, side by side with a victor, there was nearly no difference.

I'm guessing these are the small bottle? My advice is to pick up larger bottles.

Unless you are going to do a lot of production cutting work, you don't really need a scarfing tip. It is a specialized tool for cutting rivet heads and separating fillet welds where you need to have a clean smooth surface. Just cut off the perches with a regular tip and then hit what is left of them with a grinder to make it pretty.

I'm guessing that making torches like those is not exactly rocket science (and they seem very good at copying Victor's stuff from what you say), but all the same you might want to make sure they have the anti-backflame devices built-in as do the main brands, or add them as needed? That is probably one area where I would not want to cut corners.
