Anyone willing to help with a suspension change on a Sat morning? I am trying to use the same garage the tranny was changed in but that may be full and busy then so I might have to use my carport. I of course will supply all the tools and a full lunch for anyone who cares to help.

Already signed up to drive for the swannanoa valley museum, for the mount Mitchell toll road ride.

Dave you know we would be there if we could, but like E said we will be leaving OBX that morning. :( Any chance we can do it a different weekend?

Changed the date to March 31. Is that a more convenient date?

Hey @David1947 just so you know, that is the start of Spring Break for a lot of kids. We are leaving for Florida that Saturday. Are you committed to the 31st or are you flexible for another day? I would love to come help but that is just a bad week.

@David1947 wish I could make it out there, and I may be able to, need to talk with my wife.

I don't know if you've swapped out the suspension before, but just having done mine alone in the garage, some random thoughts:
  • I used a floor jack (to lift from diff), an 80 Series bottle jack (to help position axle when installing new springs), and 2-3 jackstands (for obvious safety reasons). The bottle jack was extremely useful throughout.
  • Applied Kroil a week before I did the work, and a couple more times prior to starting. Every nut and bolt and pin came right off, incl the small 12mm holding the pin on the fixed end of each spring. Some of the ubolt nuts were stubborn (mine were original) and resisted the impact, but a HiLift handle made a great lever to get them started.
  • Brass drift and 3 lb hammer drove the pins and shackles out easily.
  • My new ubolts had 22mm nuts. Luckily I have a very deep 22mm socket so i could get them snugged up close, then cut the excess ubolt off and torqued them down. Otherwise, standard hand tools are fine - 12mm, 17mm, 19mm, maybe 21mm also.
  • Dewalt cutoff disks on a 4.5" grinder are the bomb. Had some other disks, but the ubolts ate them up.
  • Don't torque the shackles/pins until all 4 wheels are on the ground. I used 60 ft lbs for those, and rechecked twice since doing the work. Seen differing opinions on the ubolts, so I used factory spec (iirc) of 60 ft lbs also.
This is all probably very common knowledge and redundant for you and most people...

@littlejoe Thank you for the wisdom. I plan to start this coming week once I get the lift kit from 4 Wheel Parts and since I will be at home I can take my time and not be in a rush. I have 4 good jack stands, a 2.5 ton floor jack and enough wrenches and sockets to start tool store so I hope I am in good shape there. With two 4 1/2" grinders, did I mention I am a tool junkie?, and several cut off wheels I should be in good shape there as well. And I do have a new can of penetrating oil. So if it takes me several days, I'm okay with that. I do look forward to an improved ride and a 40 that doesn't sag in the rear.
