Dave,
Several of us have followed the lead of others and selected that combination. I strongly recommend the programming software from http://www.g4hfq.co.uk/

I am using a "black box" that has a USB to TTL converter and it works perfectly with this application. See: http://ttl2usb.com/

Thanks for that info B. I'm sure I'll need it shortly.

Just ordered my expansion cables off of EBay. If all goes well...I could do my install this weekend.

That is if my new baby girl does'nt need me :-) (2 1/2 weeks and growing!)

B,

I've got that combination to program my VX-2 and my FT-2800.
Bob Freeth (G4HFQ) is a great guy and he makes an excellent product.

Something else that's pretty cool is ARRL's TravelPlus software. Think of it the ARRL repeater book, with an interactive map and GPS capabilities. It lists repeaters in most fréquences, plus echolink. Very cool stuff.

Regards

Alvaro

KD7YKB.

I've been out ot touch for a while, and I'm looking for a new unit to put in my FJC.

Got my call sign today...
KE7NKP
running a Yaesu VX-6R with a comet dual band antenna and will give that radio to my 9yr old when he gets his ticket. Then I get the 8800!
I am trying to take as many of my local AZ FJ Cruiser folks into 2800's since they are not much more than a good cb.
enjoy

For all the good it does me, I don't see a radio in the budget any time soon. :frown:

When I can afford one I'll probably start with an HT so I can move it from the FJ40 to the 100 LC with a minimum of drama.

KG6AJV

Yaesu VX-5R, excellent little rig but out of production now.

Moves from house to car to car to backpack,...

Dan.

Call is KC0IGP.

Kenwood 241A (2M) with a 1/4 wave mag mount.

N5UJY
Yaesu handheld
Kenwood 2m 440 in Land Cruiser
I used to use them often when I lived in Albuquerque but now only occasionally on the trail

Ok, ok, enuf already - I've lurked around here for far too long.
I better post up somethin'...

Tom Ferrin
Mill Valley, CA
KI6FLL (general)
Radios: Icom IC-208H (2m + 70cm) and Yaesu VX-170 (2m)
Antennas: Comet CA-2x4SR (road) and Comet SBB-1 (trail)
Software: Bob Freeth's (G4HFQ) and Icom's CS-208

For those of you in central California with 70cm capability, I often monitor on CARLA (www.carlaradio.net). It's a linked repeater system with wide area coverage. It's usually pretty quiet and so makes for a good system to monitor while listening to audio books or music. Check it out and then give me a holler sometime.

I'm going to my first amateur radio club meeting tonight. Have read most of your posts and have always been interested in ham radio. Too much on the internet though besides the few good general info sites so I figured some old school guys could show me the way.

Just stumbled on this forum

Been a ham for 25+ years. Run mobile HF (all bands) using Icom IC-706MKIIG with SGC tuner and 102" whip. For VHF/UHF am using Kenwood D700A.

Extra Class License: KD7NX

I just got done installing an IC-208H this weekend, and listened in on the guys on the space station yesterday.

Now I need to find a good (technician class) repeater in the North Dallas area.

Woo Hoo......
I've got a call sign - KI6KNC

Took the test 10 days ago - thanks hamtestonline.com and passed. PKP 80 (Sam) also passed ...although they did seperate us while taking the test....I think Sam was trying to copy my answers

Now time to spend $$$. I'm looking at the Yaesu FT8800 and trying to figure out where to mount the antenna on the roof rack.

Thank you all for motivating me to take the test.

cheers,
David

Just finished taking and passing my Technician and General test today. I also took the Extra and failed miseribly. I guess I'd better buy the darn book and study for that one...
Will update as soon as I receive my call sign.

Thx,
Ron W.

My Call sign came in the Morning before I hit the Rubicon just in time KI6KNB.

David you were right it is an I not a 1, lol. I must have been copying.

As a side note used the HAM throughout the Rubicon and on the drive to and from the trail and it was the GREATEST thing ever. CB is in the back pocket.
