It's an 83 60 purchased the H55F new also a transfercase from an 85 with both of the drive shafts everything bolted up fine but when I picked it up from the shop it didn't feel right. I seems as if I'm stuck on L4 when I shift into revers the 4WD light come on? and when I shift the transfer the backup lights come one? could it be the linkage on the transfercase? I have to wait ti'll monday for the shop to take a look at but any help now wuld be appreciated.

I'm trying to remember the wiring, but there is a wiring harness that connects the tranny and t-case that is responsible for these signals. Yours is hooked up wrong. Likely an easy fix. If it shifts and doesn't grind you are probably OK. Is the t-case in 4 high or not?

sounds like the 4WD and backup switches are hooked up to each other's harness

recheck recheck

Wires were crossed..

the H55F has a low reverse (like first gear) so it will seem slow in reverse..

I'm thinking that that's what might me be the case. But would that make it feel like it's on L4? I'm pretty sure that in H2. I'm just really bummed out right now about this whole deal right now. I know that there's def. something wrong just not sure what.

what do U mean by that?

The H55F first and reverse are 4.84 which is lower than the stock first gear in the 4 speed.

The first gear with the H55F will feel considerably lower than you were used to with the 4speed.

I see what U'r saying but when U cant go past 40MPH in 5th gear I'm sure there's something wrong. Is the Shifting for the transfercase the same for all 60's?

The only way I can see this is you have to be in low range on the TC. Maybe they forgot to reconnect the linkage on top of transfer case and it is stuck in low.

Where is your transfer case level? When you move it right to left to go to high to low do you feel any resistance.

Get under you cruiser and feel above the transfer case and see if it is connected. It is on the passenger side towards back of tc.

Maybe there are two things wrong. The wiring AND the linkage could be at issue here.

i did this when i put my 4 spd back in after a clutch job.

the plugs for the backup lights and 4wd have the same plug ends, they are just color coded, one set is blue the other is yellow or white.
simply swaping the plugs will set things right.

probably won't even have to jack the truck up.

I bet when the transfer case was being put back together, the shift fork was inserted in front of the shift collar. The split case is tricky to put back together as you have to do many things all at once when you put the halves together. The reversed lights connection may be another sign of inexperience or just someone in a hurry.

Did you install a later model FJ60 t-case shift linkage? If not, and you used your originals (without modification), you'll have difficulty shifting the t-case. Your 1983 didn't originally come with the proper t-case shift linkage for a H55f 5 speed. The parts are still available new from Toyota, or aftermarket parts specialists used.

I used the linkage from the 85 transfercase. Is the shifting on the transfercase the same for 60's and 62's?

Hey beanz2 would this be hard to fix or do I have to have the transfercase taken apart again? Tommorrow I'll get to check it out closely but since I don't really know what the hell I'm doing I'm comming here for U guy's to help me out. Thanks for all the help guy's!

Thanks brian! I'm going to give this a try since the shifter feels really sloppy when i'm trying to shift it around. Hopefully this will work since I'm almost positive that it's the transfercase.

If what I guessed is what is happening, you have to open up the case to fix it. Definitely something for the shop to redo, don't do it yourself since you've already paid for the work (think of your time and trouble). Check the lever on top of the case, move it back and forth with the tranny in neutral, wheels blocked. If it feels light (it is kind of hard to explain by words) it may not be engaging the shift collar.

Well I just got back in from messing with the shifter in the tranfercase. I disconnected the armthat goes to the transfercase and started shifting the little stub that was left on the TC and I can only feel one click when I try to twist it left and right? I should be able to feel at least two of them right?

I'm thinking the high-low shifter fork is not in the groove in the shaft. It is easy to re assemble this way if you don't know to watch for it. I was warned before I did mine and still did it wrong the first try. I'll bet this is your problem. The only fix is to reopen the case.

If you have a local Cruiser shop-go there for diagnosis, because they will pick this up right away, but an average shop will never get it, and will be very resistant to opening the case back up.
