Hello and Happy 4th! I’ve got a 85 FJ60 with a PO installed split case and H55. Just rebuilt my split case and think we solved the mystery 5th gear noise. Everything went smoothly with expert info from Georg; that guy is a wealth of knowledge!

Ok my question: There’s a threaded blind hole on the side of the H55 case, next to fill hole. Pic below. Is that a ground location for when the H55 is installed in a 62? I swear I searched and could not find anything, nor did the chassis, trans and electrical manuals have any info.

Thanks in advance and cheers!

It's where the PTO shifter bracket attaches.

Brilliant! Thanks Matt. I’ll have to drive over to your place sometime. This was a pretty big job (for me) and took a while since I had to do it on my buddy’s lift, on his time, in Ruskin, FL, 30 min away. But a great learning experience!

What ended up being the issue?

It was a doozy! Inside the H55's 5th gear housing, the fifth gear walked off the shaft about a 1/4 inch because whoever was in this split case before neglected to install a support bearing which it's on the "skinny half" of the tcase. Gears not aligned could have been making the "ringing" sound. As Georg informed me, this bearing is not in the rebuild kit and was probably removed but not replaced. We are assuming this allowed the shaft to move up/down/left/right under load. If you notice in the pic, they also tossed on a couple spacers which don't belong. They were probably spinning around making a racket too.

Finally, my throwout bearing was squealing so we did new clutch kit, rear main and pilot, resurfaced flywheel.

Tcase got new bearings, seals, gaskets, upgraded long-spline input gear and a new input shaft bearing. Got the tcase support powder coated bc why the heck not! Bit of an adventure!

Whoever previously built that transmission shouldn't be allowed to take the cap off a fuel tank.

If they left the output shaft rear bearing off the end of the shaft, there would be nothing holding fifth gear in place; in overrun the 'thrust' component on the 5th gear teeth would tend to push the gear back down the shaft.

Good to hear that a (very!) competent person put it together now.
