I am trying to pull the output shaft on a H55 trans currently I have the bearing 2/3s out but it will not come out any further even thought it is loose in the trans case should the output shaft not slide out at this point.
I have looked over the FSM on removal and it appears the shaft should slide out the front of the case, the FSM shows a special puller to drive it out which I do not have is there an alternate solution to remove the shaft.
Do I have to remove the countershaft bearing so it will drop down enough to allow clearance for the output shaft gear to slide out I dont think this is neccasary because the gears are horizontally cut and the gears should slide away from each other but this is my first dissection and need some feedback I dont want to screw this up.

Here are some Pics everyone likes pictures.

Yes you have to pull the counter shaft bearings. The countershaft has to drop down so the input shaft will clear. Be ready for 17 loose bearings to fall out as you pull that shaft. Its actually those small teeth on the back of the gear (I think they are synchro gears) that bind up and won't let you pull the input shaft. And sorry to say you have to pull the countershaft bearing on the back of the case as well. And the only way to do that is by pulling all of the 5th gear components.

I recently replaced the bearing on the input shaft of mine so I know your pain.

Tony, can you post a pic, if you have it, of what you used to pull the Counter Shaft bearings ... ?

Thanks

Unfortunately I dont have a picture. But what I used was two small 90 degree bend prybars inserted into the snap ring grooves. Just worked my way around the bearings and fortunately mine came out. I think they were made by Matco. But before you can do that you have to pull some stuff off at the back and I don't have the fancy puller that Toyota calls for. And to get the gear off on the back side I used a two jaw puller with really long arms.

If you don't have a FSM for the H55, SOR sells them for about 9 bucks and are well worth it for the info.

KYNOT62 how did you remove the input shaft bearing... putting it on looks to be easy and wont be an issue but pulling it off the shaft looks like it may be a challenge.
Did the shaft slide out easy on your trans or did you have to work at getting it out once you dropped the counter shaft.
Was there an issue with the input bearing or are doing a rebuild,on mine the counter bearing self destructed and split my front cover on the counter shaft I replaced the bearing but did not take the time to take off the top cover and inspect the gears and 6 months later I am having to replace 2 shafts instead of what would of been the one shaft.

The input shaft bearing has to be pressed off the shaft. I have a cheesy 12 ton press that worked just fine. And with the help of a piece of pipe I pressed the new one back on.

Being that you got the shaft out as far as you have it should not be too much problem to get it the rest of the way out. I think I was using spacers under the pry bars all the way out. It wasn't overly hard to get out. Just a bit snug and I think it would have come easier if I had the special tool. Just try to keep the bearing square to the face of the tranny if you are prying it out.

And don't be surprised when you pull the bearing off that shaft. It is strange in that the inner race is two pieces that are not attached to the bearing. I can post a pic if need be, I still have the old bearing.
