H4 switch for electronic transfer case control on HZJ76

Recently I realized (while struck in 2 feet of mud) that my transfer case does not shift into 4WD. This cruiser (2002 HZJ76 Japanese market) is new to me and I never had a solenoid controlled transfer case before. After going nuts with the manual front hub locks, I took apart the dashboard switch just to notice that it’s not connected to anything

This is what I have: the solenoids on the firewall are in place, seem to be connected and all vacuum lines are there. In the dashboard I had an H4/Hub lock double switch. Took apart the dash and found a loose connector, but it doesn’t match the switch.

Can someone tell me if the connector I’ve found is in fact the right one coming from the solenoids. If so, i obviously have the wrong switches. If not, then I need to dig deeper in the dashboard to look for another loose connector and figure out what this one does.

Thats a used one for sale, certainly looks the same Does your switch have a part number somewhere? I think there should be another connector there down below. I remember on 73 series, the connection was never tight.

Those are easy to find as they where common in most 70 series before the wide nose and new dash, just search for a land cruiser wrecker /parts seller near you

I think you could wire your existing "incorrect switch" to work. But the proper switch is very common as it was used 84 to 99.
Do you know if the vacuum is working?

All pieces seem to be in place. The solenoids are connected and the vacuum hoses are attached. How can I test the solenoids if they work without the switch?

I think by swapping the plugs on the 2 solenoids they will reverse their function, so it should engage the t/case into 4wd. But it still needs vacuum. You can check by removing the hose at the vacuum pump and feeling for it.

I was able to find a used switch and tested the solenoids. One of them is faulty. Searching online I only see options around $400 apiece. Does it sound right? Will other land cruiser (60 series or Prado) vacuum solenoid work?

Yes and I think aftermarket ones are fairly easy to get working also. Bosch? The aircon also uses one on the fast idle gadget.

You can get these for $20 from china, similar but different shape

You can swap the vac lines from one to the other to test if vacuum and tcase are working. Swapping connectors round isnt a quick test cos they are keyed ie the 2wd connector doesnt fit the 4wd solenoid and vice versa. You can also jump 12v to the solenoid to see if it shifts.

If you're after the 24v H4 switch... I ordered 84722-60060 recently. Looks right and shiny. Haven't swapped my dual switch (Hub Lock/H4) out for it yet though.

If you're after the 24v H4 switch... I ordered 84722-60060 recently. Looks right and shiny. Haven't swapped my dual switch (Hub Lock/H4) out for it yet though.

Both connectors for either the dual button or single button type were tied into the main harness for me. It was just a matter of changing out from dual button to the single H4 button itself. Hope that made sense. Absolutely no new connector was needed.
