I’m heading to Australia in a few weeks and plan on purchasing a manual swap for my 80.

I see plenty of h151’s from 79 series for sale.

I’m assuming not all h150/1/2’s will bolt up to our 1fzfe engines?

Of course I tried a different search just now and found some answers.

So H150’s will be in my sights also.

Any Aussies out there have advise when it comes to purchasing? As in reputable recyclers.

I will be arriving in Sydney and travelling as far as Brisbane and Melbourne.

Cheers and thanks🍻

Have fun! I was over there 15yrs ago for six weeks. One of the best vacations I have ever had.

Any H15x trans will work. You just have to swap the input shaft out in the trans and use the 1FZ bell housing.

Cheers

Looking forward to the trip, going for 5 weeks.

Thanks for the reply, I read quite a bit but always seems to lead into a diesel install most times along with the trans and often conflicting info.

I will be, if I get the manual transmission, be doing a dedicated thread for install on the 1fz 80.

Cheers

Heaps of H151F out of 1FZ's for sale usually around AUD$800 just look on marketplace when you get here. Lots of people parting out manuals you can get everything you need bar LHD pedals and the like.

Is your cruiser LHD?

I'm working on collecting parts for the swap and have 99% of what I need. Just need to order a transmission.

I haven't jumped into the gearing charts to figure out exactly which combination of diff gears / T case gears / transmission I'm going to go with yet though - but I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with an H152. I'm sure you're aware the 150/151/152 all have different gear ratios for 1st and others? I'm not sure which is best for the 1FZ. For my 1HDFT the H152 should be good but others have said if it's a 1HZ to stick the 150/151 for a better 5th gear.

@logicbyondreaso turned me on to an Australian company that's making some cool products for manual swaps - auto to manual floor plates and auto to manual crossmembers.

Another thing that would be good to look around for, or buy included with a transmission, is the wiring harness that should allow you to retain cruise control.

Also just an FYI - I know you're probably not buying new but I also priced out new transmissions and it looks like you can pick up brand new OEM H152s in the US for around $3K from a dealer. And Dave at Japan 4x4 said he can ship H150, H151 or H152 brand new as well.

I may have an extra LHD clutch pedal, shift boot and shifter - if you need them, let me know.

Yes, LH drive USA truck, 1993.

From my research, the 152 has the better 5th gear for lower crying rpm’s. Lowers it about 400?

My understanding is 1st and 2nd along with their syncro’s is the only other difference.

There is a 5th gear upgrade available for the 150/151.

I’m going to look for a transmission from a factory 1Fz machine. Looking on FB marketplace shows readily available used units. I’ve seen complete set-ups available as packages for $18-2200 Australian.

No matter what I get I will strip it down to replace worn parts and bearings so it’s fresh when it goes in.

As for new, I’m in Canada and new, even from Dave at Japan4x4, would blow my budget🤦‍♂️. But budgets are meant to be blown😂

Thanks for those links and the possible parts offer, will keep that in mind🍻

Anything from a 7# series will have the shifter in a different position to the 80 series.

I think further forward by 50mm.

H152 will all be for V8 7# series, you'll need a FZ bellhousing and input shaft, and the shifter will be in the forward position.

My preference would be the H152. Lower 1st & 2nd gear ratios than H151F. The overdrive, I can take it or leave it.
I've found the H151F 1st gear too tall for some offroad stuff, mainly steep, rocky terrain.

Try

Allfourx4 in Newcastle area. They know cruisers, but may be pricey

All Model 4wd Spares at Revesby (Western Sydney)
Website isn't opening for me.
I've used these guys quite a bit.

Or, take a scenic 3hr drive and go visit some gorgeous beaches around Ulladulla, Batemans Bay area, get as many meat pies from Hayden's Pies in Ulladulla as you can pack in a cooler ( your tummy will love you forever), then call in at Wandie Wreckers on the highway at Wandandian. Old school wrecker with a paddock full of stuff. Last time I drove past they had a bunch of 40s in the front of the lot.

@DivByZero may have other suggestions.

Fantastic info, thanks mister 🍻

Meat pies and beer, oh boy, now I’m definitely going that way for hopefully parts but definitely pies and beer🕺🕺

If you can swing it, go to Fraser Island. You can rent a 4x4 and they will even set you up with camping gear. I did this in an early 90’s diesel Hilux for my 36th birthday. I went solo for four days, absolutely fantastic time.

Cheers

All booked already!

Renting a Prado but we asked for a 70 series and they said it’s a good chance we will get one as we’re first on the wait list.

I think, not sure, but rental troopies may not be allowed on Fraser Island?

Loads of tourists have rolled them in the sand because they tend to be top heavy, and have narrow wheel track.

Fraser Island is absolutely worth a visit. Good time of year. Plenty warm enough to swim, but not too hot.

If you are driving Sydney to Melbourne, go along the coast with a side trip to Jindabyne & Thredbo in the Alps ( lol ), and back to Mallacoota to continue along the coast to Melbourne. If you're not sick of beautiful beaches by the time you get to Melbourne, continue along The Great Ocean Road.

The South Coast of NSW is my favourite part of the country ( that I've visited). Anywhere from Ulladulla down is gorgeous.

How much time do you have in Aus?
Got an itinerary? Or travel plan?

AUS is always worth a trip. Spent 11 months there in 2006 when my parents took a sabbatical, came back for shorter holidays every few years after that. The trusty 105 ist still stored in a friends barn near Cairns, ready to go with all the camping gear.

5 weeks, only a couple planned destinations.

I don’t like set in stone itineraries when I travel!

But keep the suggestions coming, I don’t get off on tourist traps/destinations.

I like the quiet relaxed no rushed scene🍻

Thanks for the suggestions 🕺

I’m on sabbatical actually and without the wife😬.

One of my students from 5 years ago who became a great friend and the wife considers him sort of a son is with me.

He’s a helicopter AME and I’m a fixed wing AME. He’s going to check out jobs while he’s down there and I may also.

I predominantly worked on smaller aircraft doing bush work. Twin Otters, Beavers, Caravans etc.

Is the clutch bucket/mount the same between Lh and rh drives?

Let me think about this, I'll shoot you some suggestions.
There's loads of awesome country to see away from the typical tourist stuff.

Some stuff is worth suffering the tourist traps too

So if I’m reading correctly a h152 vdj79 box will work. Either the the early or later version.??

Required changes are input shaft for 1Fz, bell housing and use the 300mm clutch as the 275mm is inadequate and will slip. And of course flywheel for 1Fz.

152 will have the shifter more fwd about 50mm or 2”. I assume heating and massaging of shifter will provide clearance?

My full-time case will bolt up if gearbox does not have the pt case with it. Really would prefer pt case so will definitely try and get that.

Anyone have pics of how far shifter sits with the 152 in a Fzj80?

I will try and acquire cross member but I’m not sweating it as I’m a capable fabricator. Same as clutch pedal basket.

Manual ECU(not absolutely necessary?) and wiring harness for cruise control.

Clutch master(vacuum type?) and slave along with NEW clutch and pressure plate and throw-out bearing.

Getting excited about this mod 🕺🕺

There was a 275mm clutch used behind 1fz in 75 series, but the clutch will have a fine spline. So, 300mm clutch and flywheel is the easy option. Slip the flywheel into your wife's carry on luggage.
You're welcome 👍

You can change the shifter position on the gearbox, but it requires disassembly of the gearbox, and maybe some different shift rails. The shifter tower is oriented 180⁰ different. There is also different shifter towers for different configurations.

Yes, full time case will bolt up.

Try a search in the diesel tech section. @wedgetail documented his H152 installation

Cross member is the same for manual or auto, the brackets and bolt holes locations are different on the frame.

Same as clutch pedal basket.
definitely try to get a full clutch pedal and bracket assembly. Even if you need to modify, or replicate it for LHD, if would still be easier than reinventing the wheel.
The 80series clutch pedal assembly uses a spring loaded lever system to reduce pedal effort. This is worth retaining.

Manual ECU(not absolutely necessary?) and wiring harness for cruise control.
Unsure of differences.

Clutch master(vacuum type?) and slave
lI wouldn't bother with the vacuum assisted clutch. I find the clutch pedal effort is not bad, except in very slow moving traffic.
make sure master and slave are from the same year model. They was changes.
I used master and slave from a fzj105 in my 80. I don't think there's any functional difference. The 105 master cylinder had a more compact accumulator on it.
I think the price was better, and some 80 series part numbers have been superseded.

along with NEW clutch and pressure plate and throw-out bearing.
Be careful with sourcing throw out bearing. Lots of aftermarket clutch kits include the throw out bearing. My clutch kit came with the wrong throw out bearing. Part number showed as correct, but there's more than one part number, and the one i was supplied was 5mm too short. This meant zero clutch action.

Getting excited about this mod 🕺🕺
I don't think i would tolerate an 80 series auto. The couple I've driven have been lack lustre.
I enjoy driving my manual 80.

Be careful what gear oil you put in it. The wrong oil can make then shift terribly. The right oil can transform how they shift.

@mudgudgeon um gonna owe you some beer and pies when I get down there!!

🍻🍻
