Come on now. There's no way you can objectively say the GX460 is a superior vehicle to the GX550. It has far less horsepower and torque, about 2,0000 lbs less towing capacity, half the cargo volume (45 vs 90), less wheel articulation, no rear locker, and far (far) less technology. It hasn't changed much since 2009. What objective measurement can we reference where the 550 falls short?
I'm coming out of a fully loaded 2023 Defender with every creature comfort and optional piece of off-road kit, and I find the GX550 very comparable across the board, and superior in many areas such as useful tech and being extremely off-road capable without mods. In fact, the GX550 had so many improvements over the Defender, I sold the Defender after only a year to get the GX. This guy calls the GX - that opinion is clearly an outlier. Everything I touch in the 550 Overtrail+ feels like quality. I really find it hard to believe someone could sit in that massaging seat, hold the heated steering wheel, reach into the cool box to grab a beverage, and think to themselves this vehicle feels cheap. GTFO.
I'm curious what someone typically drives if this vehicle feels cheap. It's only fair to ask yourself, are you trying to be coddled with an emphasis on luxury, or do you want something you can take to the office or on a date night, but also toss your wet camping gear into and haul some firewood back to the campsite on the weekends? If you want luxury, compare it to a Mercedes GL, Range Rover, or a BMW X7. I have near total confidence Lexus was not trying to compete in that market with the GX. It was designed to be a Defender killer with an emphasis on function. They're selling very well, so clearly the court of opinion has spoken.
