Back at the end of last September, I bought a Front Runner Outfitters Slimline II roof rack. I was very impressed with the versatility of their racks. They have a crazy variety of accessories. Removal of the factory rack was pretty straight forward. Assembly of the Front Runner was just as simple. My wife helped my lift it into position. Bolting it down to the roof was kind of a slow tedious process as wobble sockets and open end wrenches were required. I picked up a high-lift mount and attached it to the side.

It of course has some wind noise. It is very sturdy. Yes, I stood on it.

I live over in Bellevue TN and am picking up my GX this Saturday. Wish I was getting your color, its amazing. Once I get a few modifications I would love to do some trails with you guys.

I had a Smittybilt XL rooftop tent in the garage, but it was damaged in shipping. A quick phone call and sending some pics to Blueline Expedition Outfitters was all it took to get a new tent on its way. When the replacement arrived, I mounted the tent brackets and bolted the tent down.

This tent is massive. The interior is about the size of a king sized bed, and has plenty of room for my family. Complete set up and tear down take about 15 minutes for me to do solo (the 4' 11" wife can't reach anything). You can definitely feel the weight of the tent on the roof when turning. At interstate speeds, the wind can really get a hold of it as well.

Do you think you will regret having the RTT installed all the time. I am planning on getting one but it sounds like it might be more hassle than I thought.

Honestly I didn't think it would be an issue. I mean I've seen so many others offroading lifted vehicles with tents, and even in off camber situations, they seem to not be a problem. I even built a 9 foot tall garage door on my new house to be able to keep the tent on the rack. Luckily the tent is easy to remove and reinstall, and I will most likely remove it before going to any serious OHV parks. My plan is to build a small trailer for the tent, so I can drop it off and have a basecamp.

Awesome read! Little question, after 2 years do you feel the RTT was worth it? I'm in a position to get one soon, but not quite sure yet since I have 3 dogs.

We're looking forward to doing the same suspension set up with our GX. Slowly gathering the parts :)

To answer your question 2 years after you asked. The RTT was great for my family. I don't think I would ever take my dogs in a RTT as they are rather large.

In 2017 I bought a 4x4 labs swing out kit, and built a rear tire carrier.

Later that year I bought a tube bender, band saw, and a mig welder (so much nicer than stick). I fabricated some weld on rock sliders with 2" x .250" A500 structural steel and some 1.75" x .250" DOM Round tube (so hard to bend almost died).

Looks great! How have they held up?
The sliders have held up great. DOM steel is ridiculously strong. The paint not so much, but that's why I chose a rattle can finish. Touching them up is too easy.

That looks dope as eff dude! Love the Blue/Gold contrast, reminds me of the old Scoobs.

^ This. Fantastic choice of color for those sliders.
