Hi all, looking for some group wisdom on a potential purchase. I'm coming from a 2006 4Runner with the 4.7L that was totalled (and I have quite a bit of other experience with the 2UZ). I've still got eyes open for an LX/LC/GX470 of that vintage, but am increasingly becoming interested in the 460 as an option. I looked at and drove one today, and wanted to get some opinions. I have had vehicles with the 2UZ in them for so long that I feel confident in what to look for, work needed to baseline, and whether or not one I go look at is a good example or not. I am not there yet with the 460, so here I am.

It's a 2013, with 187K miles. White with tan interior, both of which are my preference. Small amount of surface rust that I'm fully comfortable with. It was serviced at a Lexus dealership its entire life, with regular visits and periodic maintenance. However, a couple things that seem to be potential sticking points on the forum aren't mentioned.

It had a transmission flush early in its life, around 30K. There's no mention of any work past that. Would that be a point of concern for anyone here? I'd be doing a drain and fill myself on most likely anything I buy, but worry about long term consequences.

There are two coolant drain and fills mentioned, the last about 30K miles ago. Coolant level was fine when I saw it, and I couldn't find any pink stuff that would indicate a serious leak (completely aware that a seller could have cleaned it up before my visit). No overheating issues on my 20 minute drive. Is it an inevitability that the valley plate is either leaking or will leak shortly after I would take ownership? I'm fine doing the work myself, but it does affect what I'd pay. Same for a radiator, doesn't appear to have been swapped.

Little in the way of suspension work. A CV axle is basically it. I'm assuming I'd need to be planning to do all the good stuff (LCAs/swaybar bushings/struts/springs, etc etc etc), but I know nothing about AHC, KDSS, etc. Is there significant maintenance I'd need to be planning on as part of baselining? Again, not scared to do it but affects the price. Steering/suspension didn't feel overly loose or sloppy to me, but this is the first time I've driven a 460 so my frame of reference might not be great.

Depending on all these, fair value feels like $14-$15K to me. Hopefully I'm not way off the mark. This would not be a real off road vehicle- a mild lift, size or two up on tires, and that'll be plenty of capability for me. Thanks for any help, insight, or anything else!

If I'm looking at ~200k mile rigs with a $15k budget I'm going with the nicest truck with a 2UZ-FE that I can find. Then throwing whatever's leftover into parts for baselining & maintenance. It's the more durable powertrain.

Not that the URs are bad. IMO the better value on a 460 (or LC200 / LX570 for that matter) is in the newer ones, where you have more control over the vehicle's maintenance regimen. Everyone's risk tolerance is different but I would not want to take the risks getting into an older higher mileage 1UR / 3UR. The trans in the GX460 is also a concern.

tldr; I'd up the budget considerably and get a newer GX460 / 200 series, otherwise get yourself another truck with a 2UZ

OP:

Actually good to see the early maintenance. I don’t think a coolant valley leak is a sure thing but it does have a higher occurrence.

Even if you need to get fixed I hear many report cost now is close to what a timing belt service on a 2UZ-FE. Of course a lot cheaper for both if you do the work yourself.

There are examples of near 1M mile 1UR-FE’s now as well. I have posted those elsewhere on this site.

I just went through same thing (our 2007 GX470 was totaled). Considered just getting another 2006-08 GX, but went for a 460 instead.

Look at the KDSS hydraulic rams and try to peak at the accumulator which is behind a shield on the frame (passenger side). In my market (southern ontario), 15k USD is the absolute cheapest I could find a 460, regardless of mileage and condition. I paid exactly that ($15k USD) for a well maintained one with 130 000 miles, which was the cheapest on the market, and was private sale.

Having said all that, I personally believe $15k for any vehicle with 187k miles is a lot... I think you could probably be a bit more choosy and get something with fewer miles. And/or get something from a southern state.

While current mechanical condition and service history matter I'd say either they go ahead and do the valley plate gasket job with that $15k price or knock off $1,500. An early coolant flush is great, but what about the last ~150k miles since? Same with the trans fluid drain and fill. Also, have any other fluids/etc been changed? Diff? Transfer case? Brake? Driveshaft zerk fittings topped up on grease? At 187k miles I would hope these have been addressed at least a few times.

Regarding the trans, the biggest issue would be if they towed, how big and how often. If it's a "No" on all these, then there should be little concerns about the trans. Are there issues with 460 trans? Sure, but it's not chronic.
Many on this forum have heard me say this before, but I'll print it one more time for you, any used vehicle I've ever purchased, before purchase (or before the return date) I take to my independent (read: non-Lexus) mechanic that I've used for over 30 years for a once over on the entire vehicle. He will check everything from engine compression, every single light, every hose, ALL fluids, etc. for about $100,00. Afterwards, he'll give a list of (if any) recommendations, fixes, potential problems down the road, etc. or the thumbs up to buy it.
From your description and if the interior/exterior are all straight, pull the trigger!

I just found out I can step up into the rear and clean the rear part of the roof!
BIG PLUS for this old guy.
Love the barn door and for me it opens on the side I prefer.
The MetalTech bumper I have on the back is about a 10" step, cutting board, seat, and anything else I need it to be. It's as handy as a tail gate.
Although I do wish the barn door opened into traffic. I'd prefer having the opening towards the passenger side, just works better with the RTT and all. But that's just me.

There are a couple reasons I always loved the roll down window on my Runner- I kept rigged fly rods on a DIY mount setup in the car, and I could slide them in and out the window without having to open the hatch. I also have a bike on a rack a lot, but I can always buy a swingout to make that less painful. I do like the idea of the fold down tables I see for the barn door, would be super nice for rigging rods and eating lunch!

Too bad we don't have the power window in the barn door. I'd love that.

That Bison Gear table looks nice. 👍

No other domestic options when I got my KAON table years back so had to order from Australia.. Ordered two to split shipping cost for a local forum member

just make sure your table fits if you have drawers installed.
