Well, my 2006 RAV4, 2010 FJC, and 2018 GX have all had the same cruise control behavior.
My 90s yotas didn't. But they were also stick shifts. My mom's 4Runner wasn't too bad, but it was a 3rd gen 1998.

This is also the first nice car I have had with an automatic.

I feel like the cruise control issue is a toyota thing, my 3rd gen tacoma had similar issues, always searching for gears. Especially now with larger tires, the issue is compounded. Im hoping a re gear will help this, as I now just don't use cruise.
Yup, I too believe it's a Toyota "thing". All our Toy's (Landcruisers, Previa, GX, etc.) all suffer from a quirky cruise control.
Albeit, I don't know if it's become better now on the newer Lexus/Toyota products with dynamic cruise control since that had to be a complete re-engineering/design of the entire system.

My buddy just sold his GX for an LX and says the cruise is better on the LX. Along with a few other things…

Okay...
Another reason to start squirreling away extra coins for a new GX.

Same. My 1999 Camry, 2009 Tacoma, 2008 GX, and my in-laws 2006 and 2015 RXs all had/have wonky cruise control. My 2019 GX the best of the bunch, but it might be because it's the only one of those vehicles I've had in relatively flat Texas. The rest were in western PA. Very hilly.

has anyone tried putting the cruise control on, but moving the gear lever to the left/sport mode and noticed anything different regarding cc operation? Have not tried it, but wonder if cc behavior improves or does cc get locked out due to sport/manumatic mode?

When my car was at the dealer last week, they loaned me a new RX350h. It had some impressive features: it automatically stopped in traffic, the cruise control on the freeway was significantly better, and it even changed lanes when I used the turn signal. If the new GX has similar capabilities, the highway cruising experience should be a big improvement.

Pretty sure Toyota used the same crappy cruise control logic from the mid 80's until the implementation of Saftey Sense 2.0, or maybe even 2.5. My '13 RX still has the BS CC, even with adaptive radar. Gonna have to buy a rig from the 20's onward to get rid of that abomination.

I do. Cruise works in S mode. If you keep it in 4, that obviously minimizes the up / down / up between 4-5-6 described above. You can also shift through the gears and cruise remains engaged. However all of this requires some forethought and if I'm honest, usually I forget to do it

Not really much different. Also appears to get same mileage.

Yep, it will only work shifting down to 5th, maybe if going slower, down to 4th gear and still keep your speed.
There's a grade called Kingsbury Grade (NV state route 207) going from Gardenerville up to the South Lake Tahoe basin. It's steep and twisty. I drop it down into 5th gear and set my cruise so it doesn't have hunt for gears or pop out of cruise control.

Will the later models (mine is a 20) stay running if you park them and leave the engine on, or is there a timer that kills the engine after so long in P, as many modern cars do now?

I didn't specifically see anything about this in the manual.

EDIT, disregard the question, internet searching shows that apparently 2020+ shut off after one hour, unless certain parameters are met.

Did the same a couple years ago with an NX loaner from the dealer. I constantly use cruise control and when I got on the freeway I set the cruise control and thought I was good.
Then I started slowing down. and down... and down.
I didn't realize that the car in front of me was also slowing down and the dynamic cruise control was pacing the car in front of me! I thought the cruise control was broken!
First time experience with dynamic cruise control and it kind of confused me at first at what was going on. I wasn't expecting my loner to have that feature.

Yep anyone that tows should be doing that out of the driveway. My Dodge (it was a long time ago) and Xterra had a button that you pushed to take it out of Overdrive when towing and both were labeled OD. CC still works in the GX in Sport mode.

The radar CC on my 19 GX is much improved over the CC on my 13 Taco. Friend that owns a FJ and Tundra until recently always complained about the CC on his and my Taco was about the same. He just sold the Tundra last month and got an IS350 after riding in my GX. I asked him about the CC in the IS and he said it works much better than they used to. But he doesn't use CC much in the IS as it is just too much fun to drive without any artificial assistance.

Do you have dynamic CC in your 2019?

I knew I was\am using dynamic CC in mine but after awhile if not paying attention I will look down and see I am going 5-10 mph slower than the speed I am set at. Then tell myself damn it Junebug pay attention!

Couple of weeks ago was telling my friend that just got an IS that I wished it wasn't so sensitive at such a large distance. He laughed and said guess you didn't read the manual? Hell no it is thicker than the Tech manual for a 1200 PSI ships engine. He said hit that little button on the steering wheel with 3 lines on it and you can change the distance that it reacts to the vehicle in front of you. A year later and I'm still finding things I like about the GX.

I have. No notable change for me. If anything, S is slightly more aggressive and causes it to downshift even more. I haven't tried holding it in 4th or 5th as others suggested. I wouldn't want the MPG hit and engine strain that would cause at 90mph on Texas highways.
Edit: I don't have dynamic CC in my 2019, just the same old Toyota CC with same control knob they've been using for 30 years.

It almost feels like the cruise control software is programmed to adjust speed using the transmission instead of the throttle. So instead of adding more fuel to gain speed, it drops down a gear and keeps the throttle the same.
