I have just purchased a 1996 4.5 petrol Amazon and noticed that there was fresh grease around the ball on the passenger side (uk) I wiped it all off and checked the diff oil, which was 1/2 pint low, topped it up, that was 150 miles ago, the grease around the ball has not reappeared, do they somtimes loose grease and do you think I should top up with grease, I assume you take out the bung and screw in a grease nipple and pump up, but how do I know how much to pump in ?

No need to screw in a grease nipple. Just use a grease gun and pump in a couple of squirts.

My question would be were did the 1/2 pint go....I would pull the plug on the top of the knuckle and check the condition of the grease.

knuckle

I was a bit worried as to where the oil had gone, I will remove the knuckle plug and dip a screw driver in there to see what the grease is like, looks good what had come out of the seal,

Snowwolf - check out the threads (in the FAQ) on the front axle/birf. You may be in need of a front axle service, but read up first to see if you're in that situation. If you are, there are plenty of folks here that can/will help you out.
