Anyone got any tricks for getting grease into birfield joint assembly? I'm trying to just push it in with the palm of my hand, but it's difficult to tell whether or not I've filled it completely or not if you know what I mean. I just need to get these filled, then I'm ready to pack the knuckles, put it all back to together and hopefully be driving a cruiser again by tomorrow!

no trick just use a putty knife keep packing the grease in with that that usually works well

Use a soft spatula, and when it seems full rotate it through all the extreme angles and you'll hear popping as some air is worked out. Repack a bit and install. Be advised if you're using purple Amsoil it will stain your wife's expensive favorite spatula permanently...

Also keep in mind that if you fill the knuckle to 3/4 it will heat up and move into the joint after you run a few times. I noticed a bit of clicking at first after I replaced my birfield and then it faded after the first time it got hot...must have missed a pocket.

I'm surprised Toyota hasn't developed a SST for this procedure !

Disassemble (its quite easy) clean and reassemble with grease inside.

Ditto, if you ask me, there is no way to work the grease to the bottom of bell unless you dissassemble. HTH.

Just make sure you don't get your finger caught in the cage. This is easy to do if you have large hands. Don't ask me how I know....hehe

My greese gun end fits in the hole and sqeeze away:cheers:

The 'proper' technique is to take some sort of device that is long and skinny and plung the grease in until it comes out of the sections where the ball bearings are, then you know you have it completely full. I take a 18mm deep socket and put it on a long extension, but backwards, so it makes a good plunger to cram the grease in.. Then I cram as much grease in there as possible and I know the birfield is full of grease when it starts oozing out... Then as it spins around and grease leaks out, you know that it will lubricate as it leaks out over time...

I just bought a 94 3 weeks ago. How do you get the grease in? I am not following, sorry and have a lot to learn about cruisers.

How 'bout a little more about your situation. Sitting there with a cleaned birfield in your hand wondering how to get grease into it? Or just casually reading this post and thinking some day you're going to do this. Makes a huge difference in the reply.

:flipoff2: Welcome Bailley! The FAQ at the top of the page is a comprehensive work that can answer most of your questions when getting familiar with your rig.

Plus using this will save you getting flamed by the guys who worked so hard at getting all the info there in the first place:doh:
