The time has come to sell our 1970 FJ40. We love this rig but our family is growing and we are finding the FJ40 has become impractical for us and we drive our FJ60 much more frequently, so we have decided to sell it and put the money towards something else.

Short description: recently rebuilt 2F, spring over with stock springs, front disc brakes, front and rear ARB lockers, ARB compressor, SM465, OEM style soft top and bows, rebuilt axles, brakes, transmission, and transfer case. Many new parts. Original patina'd paint. Runs great, reliable, goes anywhere. Lots of spare parts included.

$30,000. Serious offers considered. No trades.

Long description:

History:
We bought it from a guy in Austin, TX in late 2012. We took a train from Dallas to Austin and drove it back. He had owned it for 14 years. When we bought it had: 3 speed on the floor, 2F rebuilt 2500 miles prior (engine is late 1975 build date) (rebuild is verified by engine overhaul tag by engine shop attached to block), front disc brakes, original hardtop that had been crunched at one of the top rear corners. It showed 31,xxx miles when I bought it (assuming 131,xxx). Soon after we got it I ditched the crunched original hardtop and got an OEM style soft top and bows. Drove it that way occasionally until 2016, then 2016-2017 is when I did the vast majority of the work described below.

It has never been a daily driver for us, but rather an occasional camping or mild off-road trip, or runs to Dairy Queen. The odometer stopped working since I have owned it. I have put less than 5000 miles on it since I got it. It currently shows 35,xxx miles, so assume that is 135,xxx.

Since then I have done the following work (majority was done in 2016-2017). All parts listed are new (as of 2016-2017 and less than 2500 miles ago) unless specifically noted as used. Have all receipts for new parts.

Spring over using original springs, cut and turn front axle, gusset front axle knuckles, front and rear axle gussets, Decker's rear axle anti-wrap link, fully rebuilt front and rear axles, fully rebuilt front (disc) and rear (drum) brakes, Wilwood drum brake pressure valve, e-brake shoes and cable, extended stainless flexible brake lines, leaf spring bushings, MAF extended leaf spring shackles with greasable pins, Frombe crossover high-steering, front and rear Bilstein shocks, Ford front shock towers, OME steering stabilizer, extended front and rear axle breathers, Warn M8000 winch, front and rear ARB air lockers (4.11 gears), under-hood mounted ARB twin-motor compressor, Tom Wood's front and rear double cardan driveshafts, rebuilt 3 speed transfer case, lengthened transfer case shifter linkage, rebuilt SM465, Advance Adaptors adaptor between 3 speed transfer case and SM465, SM465 shifter stick, shifter boot, custom fiberglass transmission hump cover for SM465, five OEM 15" steel wheels with matching hub caps, five 33 x 10.50 x 15 BFG KM2s with 90% tread, OEM sprare tire carrier modified to fit 33" tire, exhaust pipe (and muffler) header-back, electronic ignition, genuine Weber carb with electric choke, water pump, crank pulley seal, belt, thermostat, radiator hoses, fuel strainer, fuel line, SOR fuel tank, heater hoses, SOR heater flex duct, heater core cleaned, cowl vent seal, cowl vent drain hoses, transfer case vacuum shift hoses, flushed coolant system, coolant temp sensor, LED lights in rear bumper wired to come on in reverse or by switch, instrument panel gauge-to-glass seals, front wire junction blocks, horn relay, blinker and emergency flashers, all new bulbs including headlights, Optima Red Top battery, battery cables, used OEM low/high elephant horns, BTB dash storage box, reupholstered seats with rubberized canvas, OEM style grey soft top with used OEM bows, new door seals, roll up window seals and felt channels, vent wing window seals, hi-lift jack mounts on roll bar.

Parts included but not yet installed (not an exhaustive list of parts included):
OEM brake master cylinder, OEM voltage regulator, brown canvas summer top in mediocre but salvageable condition, extra grey soft top material, OEM LH door-to-body seal, OEM 3 speed transfer case in pieces, new windshield seal, used LH door, Saginaw power steering pump and brackets, used headlights, used turn signals, used marker lights, used seat belts, new stainless braided steel flexible brake lines, original differentials and shock towers, misc gaskets and seals, fuse box, and numerous other used, new aftermarket, and new OEM parts. Many of the parts are simply spares.

Known issues that are not discernable from the pictures:
Brake master cylinder seeps through input rod (have to top off every month or so - new OEM unit included), heater blower only works on high, speedometer failing (loud and jumpy) so have speedo cable disconnected (maybe speedo just needs to be oiled?), odometer doesn't work (but did up until approx 1000 miles ago), gear oil seep (very slow) between transmission and transfer case (leaves top side of skid plate wet but doesn't drip on ground, fuel drain back to tank if it sits for several days between starts, coolant temp gauge reads high because I have the wrong coolant temp sensor installed (runs at correct temp - verified with IR gun), driver's rear view mirror is wobbly because one of the fasteners is stripped, if driving along at partial throttle and you apply full throttle it stutters for a few seconds before responding (matter of tuning the Weber carb that I haven't done because I use full throttle so rarely in it), driver window regulator is stripped on the lower half (window cranks down halfway then stops because regulator teeth are worn) but a good complete used driver is included.

Factory castor angle was maintained during cut and turn so even with manual steering it steers easily. I started gathering components for a Saginaw power steering conversion (included) but decided it wasn't worth it so have not yet done the conversion.

With the SM465, front and rear lockers, and the spring over, this thing will go more places than I am comfortable going. It will idle uphill in 1st gear and low range. See video I took doing exactly that:

The paint is original (Capri Blue), and while not everyone shares this opinion, I like the patina look and intentionally did not have it repainted. The body is mostly straight. The LH door has a dent on the lower end and the LH front fender is bent downward a few degrees but it is almost not noticeable. Only rust is two coin-size holes in passenger floor. No tub or frame rust.

All lights except the factory reverse light work (I didn't bother getting it to work since I have the rear bumper-mounted LEDs). Wipers and horn work. Will pass Texas inspection, but is currently out of inspection and registration because let it lapse as I drive it so rarely.

It is reliable and drives great and I would not hesitate to hop in and drive it cross country tomorrow. Will drive happily all day at 65 mph.

No trades. I am happy to work with you on having it shipped if needed. Can also stay at my house under a carport for a few weeks if needed after a deal is done while shipping is arranged. Or fly in and drive it home! Located in Graham, TX, two hours west of Dallas/Fort Worth. Clear Texas title in my name.

Nice rig! Very close to what I am going to do with my new Patina project.

Thanks and cool! It was a fun build. I like doing mechanical work more than body work so it worked out well that I wanted to keep the patina'd paint.
