Does anyone have any good pictures of how/where they have mounted there GPS units? Also does anyone have a particular unit of choice. I am considering a unit specifically in the hand-held market, so pics of those units would be greatly appreciated!

Love it, wish it had an altimeter is my only complaint, and no, it doesn't block the rear view mirror enough to be bothersome.

Are you sure you dont have an alt. I have the streetpilotIII and it is on the GPS info screen off the main menu.
Mine is mounted in front of the clock on the small dash lip.

I am just amazed how much I refer to this thing while driving - I'd love to have it straight-on mounted -- mebbie the steering col??

Buy mine in the for sale section! And no, I do not miss the missing A/C heating vent!

Customize Map, Lat/Lon, turned off. Turned it on. Bingo.

Thanks!

Todd, don't you just hate that? You know when you own something for a long time, all the time bitching about something that doesn't work, then just when you are about to junk it, someone comes along and tells you how to work it. :)

I am using an old Magellan MAP 330 (16 MB) which I got cheap - the auto suction cup mount holds it to the right of the transfer case lever in my LX450. I don't like the monochrome display at all, since it is IMPOSSIBLE to read with sunglasses on and there is inadequate contrast between roads and features. I always have to pick the unit out of the cradle and hold it up in front of my face to read the durn thing!

I am strongly considering the new Magellan Meridian Color because it has a beautiful 16 color screen.

and it also has a large memory capability and selectable base maps:

This is a great resource for any GPS questions:

I sure would like an expensive fixed-mount nav system, but I need to be able to carry it with me while hiking or biking, so a handheld is for me....

That is excellent. Did you do that yourself?

Cruisin,

Thanks. Only problem with the GPS V is lack of voltage readout so it cannot act as a voltmeter for the second battery or alternator anymore. You CAN still access this feature by holding down the enter button when you power up the unit and accessing a hidden contrl panel but this is a pain in the ass. I am trying to get Garmin to add the voltage option in their next software update for the GPS V.

Yes installed myself, and can be removed for hiking/field use in about 10 seconds. Only modification was actually filing a hair off of the plastic frame behind the A/C vent. This was not necessary as the plastic did flex out of the way, but too many removals and the plastic was likely to crack. I filed about 5mm off of the plastic and the GPS wedges in very tight and secure, especially once the bezel is reinstalled. The other thing I did was to add the cable that is both power and pc together and wire the PC Serial connection to a switch blank at one of the silly coin holders on the console. This allows mapping/updating/downloading capabilities on my laptop without removing the unit from the dash.
