I'm so out of date that I don't even know what the proper term to ask about is. I would like to be able to track somebody who is going out into unfamiliar territory (and well out of cell range). This person knows this. Not trying to be sneaky, it's just a good idea when they'll be far from home. What do I need?

SPOT assuming the person will be in a covered area (most major land areas on earth are covered).

Works well, I've used it with pretty well 100% transmission success in the US (forest areas too) and in Oz.

You do have to pay the subscription fee each year, but worth it for peace of mind etc. The user can also request emergency rescue.

Anyhow, google Spot Messenger for more info.

cheers,
george.

I have a SPOT messenger. It does exactly what it's supposed to. The InReach has satellite texting which is very appealing.

Spot is the basic system/technology. Other products like InReach use the Spot system.

So, basically when I said Spot, I meant the system. It's up to the user to decide if they need to just get out basic canned: I'm ok, I'm moving, I need your help or SEND RESCUE NOW! messages or if they want to be able to also send more detailed text messages. There are Spot versions where you can connect your phone (bluetooth) and use the phone to send the Spot text message, e.g.

Of course you can also go to a Sat phone if you want more features and more expense :)

george.

Inreach uses Iridium satellites. SPOT is a subsidiary of Globalstar, and uses it's satellites.

I stand corrected. Thought they were using the Spot system, but you are correct, they are Iridium based.

cheers,
george.

A friend of mine used the spot system years ago. In those days it was just a tracking system similar to APRS, but with satellites. His wife loved it because when he and his young son were out 4 wheeling or hunting she could check up on them. IIRC he had one option for a signal which was call SAR.

Since I mentioned APRS it may be worth looking into, depending on where the person might be going. A LOT of the US is covered by IRLP relays. The catch is the person in question would need a ham license and you need a radio, GPS, and TNC. There are a few units that incorporate all three but I have no idea how well they do the job.

The OP stated "out of cell range"....

cheers,
george.

Yah it works offline. And you will not get lost using it. You can also broadcast your location to a computer or you can see your fellow cruisers in the trail.

Ok, I'll quote what the OP is requesting:

"I would like to be able to track somebody who is going out into unfamiliar territory (and well out of cell range)"

OUT OF CELL RANGE... got it?? :) How's gps kit going to transmit the location to the OP when the gps kit is out of cell range??

cheers,
george.

Thanks to all who have replied. I'll start investigating options in May.

On a similar note, I found that Satellite phones can be rented pretty cheaply. I think I'm going to try one out to gauge battery life. Yes, it'll be expensive just for research, but I view it the same as putting a couple boxes of the $$ defensive ammo through your new gun to test feeding.

One more option could be something like this.

Good luck

Tough crowd : ) will stop giving input

I think iridium has a similar solution. Sorry had to hahaha

Sorry for the mild hijack, but I wanted to share this.
when we were driving offroad in Finland, groups miles from each other, the organizers had kitted the group leaders rigs with a sweet system.

'Thingsee' gizmos reporting the location, track and speed of every group leader's cars every 25 sec.
And they could open up a detailed topo map to see each other's position and situation.
This was in beta mode, but was working extremely well, and one day when our group had multiple breakdowns and multiple stucks, going on the hours late back to camp and dinner, everyone could see our position in the bar, restaurant and any Android device back at camp.
They could see that we were heading back, slowly, and that there was no need for further action, only to keep the dinner warm :)

I'm looking forward to using this system with my mates, as soon as they can do it without network coverage.
