relatively speaking of course ;)

just took the truck for a test drive. between the new plugs (irridium) two wheel drive mod and the advanced timing (i was previously advanced, but thought I could go a bit more...now at 10-12 BTDC NORMAL, not shorted pin)...i'm a happy man. still no speed daemon but much better. folks had said the steering would be "lite" when running in two wheel drive mode...but I think it's "Just right"....especially with 37" tires. If anyone is interested I will report back the mileage (gps style mileage...granted, I have 37" tires--I am re-geared to 4.88, so kinda like stock gearing)

oh, I also found a trick way of cutting the rear of the front fenders (if needed for more clearance for larger tires). It almost looks stock, but i went from about 2" of gap to a little over 5". I took a bunch of pics, but need some time to post them up.

...on to slider trimming, 1" mr gasket spacers, a/c pressure check (all today)

edited to add pics:

****AFTER***** (note that the slider USED to be right at the edge of the old fender line, yes I've trimmed the slider back and 45* wedged it)

and NO the tire does not rub on the plastic fender (trimmed it a bit, and now it's out of the way). If it so happens to rub on the trail, that's why my trusty leatherman is for.

Don't you HAVE to short out the service plug to advance the timing, or the computer will retard as you advance???

of course I shorted out the plug.. i just got lazy in my initial post ;). I advanced the timing to about 8.5 to 9 degrees btdc WITH the plug shorted. Without it shorted (under ecu control) i show about 10 to 12 degrees btdc. I will be hooking up some obd II software up soon in order to see if my knock sensor is kicking in. but I can tell you...it was a great change in power and throttle response (anything small to this truck is great ;))

Other than the hubs, What did you do to do the 2wd cobversion? I am going to mine soon.
Gary

let see...i used the extra c-clip that came with the takeoff hubs to cover some of the gap...you'll see when you take things apart. It's one of those things that hasn't proven bad if you do it or not. I did it cuz i had the extra part. Mabrodis hasn't run anything but the stock c-clip for over a year and hasn't had any issues.

you will also need a center diff lock switch to 50/50 bias the transfer output (otherwise you won't move quickly and you will eventually burn out your transfer (insert viscous coupling issues here)...and say goodbye to ABS when in 2wd mode as you center locker will always be locked via that switch.

PS> you don't have to buy the fancy center diff lock switch if you don't want to shell out the 50+ bones. You can use a factory hazard light switch and knock off a small tab on the center diff plug to make it fit. you can pick them up used from many late model toys.

Can you still run regular gas?

negative. well at least not advisable. as you increase your chances for knocking, which will then be corrected by your ecu by automagically retarding your timing in great leaps and bounds. most high performance cars use premium fuel due to the increase in timing (yes, there are probably other reasons as well).

Do exercise caution when advancing timing. In some cases the computer can not pull lead out fast enough to prevent knocking and engine damage is possible.

So as I see it, the hubs will disengage the outer axles, and the difflock switch will keep the tcase from burning up , but what about the driveshaft still turning with the diff lock switch on? Do you just remove the driveshaft when not needed to unpower the front diff and axles? I am thinking of using Marks kit that replaces the viscous couple with a spool that locks up the front only when needed. It also uses a factory Diff Lock switch. Either way has a similar result, and I will need hubs and a switch regardless. I will check your setup out in Colorado.

oops, did I forget to mention to drop the front shaft? well, in any case, yes you have to drop the front shaft.

I think the kit you are referring to will only work on earlier year landcruisers. yours does not apply. our setups are a bit different. if you search the archives I beleive robby has a good explanation. I'm talking about the kit MAF sells, is it similair to marks?...if so, no go on your truck.

Hi.
I would be interested in some #'s on milage, I was looking into Slee's 2WD kit for my 94, I have the old T-case and have been told its a good candidate, Did you say yours was from Mark's in AU?
I have the Ctr. diff lock switch already, Just looking for a bit more info.
Im also currious about the trimming.
Many thanks

I spoke with the guys at Marks and was told that they indeed have a kit for the viscous coupled 97. Thats the way I would like to go but my list of mods is long my wife made me promise not to modify it beyond reason until we get her another car. I sold her car to buy the 97. So for now J springs is it.

pictures are uploaded to the web server, all I have to do now is make some sort of page to present it. been super busy trying to get my truck and a friends truck ready for the CO silverton trip.

Will post back here as soon as I get something whipped up. Keep checking back at kumar.fzj80.com for updates as well.

I would be interested in Mark's kit price as well...if too $$$ I will just crawl under and drop the shaft as I do now ;)
