Have to drop my fuel tank (failed Ca. Evap test) on my 1980 FJ40. Took a quick look today and plan to drop this weekend. Are there any tricks...noticed the large flange on RT side so it does not appear to be a straight drop. Im sure there are some pro's out there. Rather learn the easy way (here) than the hard way (there) :D

not sure I'm of any help, but do you have to drop it for some reason? My 1980 has a plug you can unscrew to drain, if that's all you need to do. I'm guessing you have more extensive work to do.

Why are you thinking you need to drop the tank?

Well, I went to the local smog center. It failed the evap. test, they then hooked up a fog producing machine that is intended to show leaks. The smoke was comming from somewhere from the front (top) of the tank area. I pulled the wheel well plate and the smoke was not comming from any of the 5 hoses (3 smaller feed lines,k the larger line nor the fill hose) Have already replaced the sender gasket..and pulled inspection plate during test.

What other connections are in a late model tank?
I have checked:

3 small line (lower Rt corner)
1 larger cloth covered line (same area)
Fill hose
Replaced sender gasket

Here's a pick of the stock tank from the CCOT site.....where does the "fog" look like it could be coming from?

I pulled my tank about a month ago .Get someone to help you ,drain the tank, take your time,do it outside, its easier if your 40 is lifted our 1982 j40 is.The biggest thing is to loosen all the lines on the right side of the cruiser. It took us about 2 and one half hours to pull and reenstal. Mike

I drained my tank, unhooked all connections, dropped the rear driveline & removed it myself. For me, it was as simple as it sounds.

Well, the sucker is jammed way up and tight to the body so I could not tell. All I could see from under, was the smoke was defiantly coming from the top of the tank area. Seemed to come from the top right side, but unable to tell for sure. What is the second opening in the top? The center one is for the sender unit? I might add...this was a AZ truck so rust is NOT an issue....but things do get awfull dry

I have also noticed that when I fill the tank above 1/2 tank I can smell fuel when I go around a corner
