I'm hoping someone can help a newbie out. I have just bought a 86 Hilux, running a 350 chev, turbo 350, 4" lift and 35" tyres. The trouble is that at 60km/h and at 100km/h the thing feels like it is shaking itself to death. The shudder is not coming through the steering wheel, it seems to be more in the floor. The seats feel like they're going to rip themselves off the floor. I thought the rear driveshaft might have been bolted on upside down (it was removed and replaced just before I bought it) so tried turning it aroung but didn't fix the problem. Can anyone help me with any ideas? By the way, pretend that I'm really dumb when your talking to me - I'm learning as I go.
Cheers

Welcome.

A little more info please...

Solid axle front end, or IFS?

difficult to decern in you pic...

how long have you owned this?

Do you have a tach in this?

Is there an RPM range that this occurs at?

Have you been under your truck and looked things over at all?

hey poser. Front is solid axel. Have only owned the truck for a week now but guy I bought it from says the shudder didn't happen with him. (I think he could be full of the brown stuff!) It has a tacho but haven't really noticed a specific rev range when shudder occurs, just seems to occur at 60-70 and then at 100-110. Shudder doesn't stop if I ease off the power. The only thing I can think of is maybe the U-joint angles are too much with the lift? Also considering taking it down tomorrow and getting the wheels balanced to see if that rectifies it, but apparently this was done not long ago. What do you think?

Chock the wheels, put the truck in neutral, and get under it, and grab hold of the driveshaft where it attaches to the transfer case and shake it; try to move it, and see if there is any slop there. Do the same thing where the driveshaft attaches to the rear axle. You do not want any movement of any significance...this should give you some indication of the conditon of the ujoints in the rear shaft..

Is there a cover just aft of the engine, on the transmission, that would expose the flex plate and tourque converter? I think that there should be. I would make sure that the six bolts that hold the converter to the flexplate are there, and not loose...

just another idea...

The front driveshaft is not turning while you are going down the road is it?

Victoria?

Too bad you are not in Perth....A friend just moved there from the USA, very good Toyota wrench...along with rotorcraft and fixed wing aircraft...

Good luck!

Are your hubs unlocked????

have checked the hubs. One is definately unlocked. The other wont stay on unlocked and turns itelf about 15mm. It wont go into lock either. Do you think maybe the front shaft is turning?

Take off the outer six bolts and re-position the inside collar. It's a PITA, but someone didn't know what they were doing.

Not sure if it will solve the problem though.

well, just I've checked the shaft and there is about 10mm play in it at both ends. I'm assuming this is fairly normal and hence my U-joints aren't too bad. Looked over the whole thing and can't find any loose bolts. However I did find two bolts missing off the front shaft, which I will replace but this wouldn't give me a shudder in 2wd would it?. Anyhow, still awaiting a shaft balance, and wheel balance and hoping that this will sort the problem but not really expecting it too. One tyre seems to have 'rougher' tread that the others and not sure if it is recent or not. However, if it was a tyre or alignment problem wouldn't that show itself in a sttering wheel shudder? I'm thinking that maybe the angle of the shaft is too much and I need to replace the u-joints with a CV type. Any more ideas?

Clearly the vehicle is rejecting the bastardization process involved in the Chevy 350 transplant, rejecting the organ, so to say. I think your truck is trying to kill itself.
