So I was driving back from work, just pulled onto the highway traffic was backed up because of a light. I come to a rolling stop with about a car length in front of me, waiting waiting, wait-BANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A 2008 GMC 1500 hits the back HARD, takes a few seconds for me to figure out what the hell just happened.
Anyway the other guy (Young kid in daddies truck) has totally destroyed his bumper and grill, hood is buckled a good 1foot high at the peak. The back of my cruiser is in amazingly good shape, he hit me off center, the s***ty tin part of the bumper is mangled but the steel cross beam looks in good shape. The wrap around part of the OEM bumper has crushed in a small bit of the lower quarter panel (putting a small crinkle in the exhaust in the process but other than that the truck is in good shape. My back and neck hurt like a REAL SOB but hey that heals right!

Any who now to see what I can replace the bumper with! Anyone know what the going rate is for an 89 BJ74 rear bumper? Id like to get a cash settlement out of ICBC for the bumper rather than have it replaced but id like to get an idea as to what its worth before I take it into the claims center...

Howdy! Sorry to hear about your bad luck. Can't help you with bumper info, but I do hope you get your body checked out for damages. It may take several days before you feel the full impact of the wreck. My daughter just went thru this. Her 4th day was the worst. Many years ago, I was in a wreck. Originally, they only found 1/2 of my problems, so much later I had to deal with fixing the things they missed. It has been a royal pain in the neck, literally. Take good care of yourself first, the bumper later. Good Luck. John

Now you know of course that as far as ICBC is concerned it's a write off. Why, you ask? Because it's a RHD and that alone is why the accident happened!

Make sure they do not try to screw you over on the repairs because of the RHD and make sure you see your doctor/chiropractor about the back.

Cruiser_guy is 100% correct on both of his points. When ICBC has their hands on on the Cruiser, they will most likely declare "Dismantle" - which means it can never be registered again. IMHO, unless it really is major, I wouldn't make the claim for damages.

Unfortunately, don't sign anything , especially regarding the injury, without seeking independent legal advice.. ICBC WILL screw you over, and you will end up with a better settlement it if you have legal assistance.. That's the way the system works. Whiplash injuries really take a few days to a week to show up, and since it is soft tissue damage, it doesn't show on x-rays.

Lawyers will take on these type of cases on a contingency basis, no money up front, and they only get 30% (or more) of the settlement. (That's one ways how 95% of lawyers give the rest a bad name:o) But you will end up with more in your pocket, and better medical treatment/coverage.

BTW, I'm not a lawyer, just an experienced customer.

Hey Walker, I have a rear factory bumper off my 87 I can part with complete with brackets and hardware etc. Its in excellent shape with no rust or dents, plus I'm in Calgary so shipping wouldnt be that bad... PM me if interested...

Hey thanks guy! well im about to bring it into the inspection center today so we shall see what they are going to do...
I appreciate the offer Natty, but I think im just going to fight for a cash settlement on the truck instead of getting them to repair it. Id much rather pull the tin bumper off and zap an extra 100 lbs of steel maybe with some homemade sliders instead.

...

No ,not always. In fact whiplash can be life time complaint. See a doctor and find a witness if possible

DON'T leave it there under ANY circumstances! When NickW rolled his HDJ81 a couple of years ago (and squashed my canoe in the process) ICBC had his truck sold to the wreckers before he had his settlement!! He had to fight to be able to keep the truck to dispose of as he wished.

Take care of your back. My son got rearended in his 62 last year. The 62 was fine, but the car that hit him was demolished.

It takes a few days for back and neck symptoms to show up. Keep an eye on it.

Walker , sorry to hear about the mis hap , I hope you are O.K. SEEK LEGAL ADVISE FIRST! I hope thing work out for you.

Soo, what did ICBC have to say, or not say?

In 93, some one rear ended my wife's car doing 100 km/h. Her car was pushed into on coming traffic but luckily was not hit again. No one called 911. No ambulance never came. The guy who hit her asked if He could take her home???? This happened before we were married. Anyway, she was brought home. She eventually went to the hospital and after getting out and recovering, ICBC wanted to settle. Being ignorant, she excepted a small settlement and signed her life away. Today, she still suffers from really bad back pain and goes to the chiropractor twice a week.
Again, do not sign anything at all! Your pains may come back to haunt you 10,20,30 years from now. Seems when we are young, any injuries we experience when young can come back much latter in life and could be disabling. Ask Jerry Lewis the comedian. He is on pain killers and other meds from all the falls he did on stage as part of his comedy shows of the 1950s.
