My 84' wagon had all of the smog stuff removed before I bought it, everything, so I've been studying the desmog diagram and wondering what I should put back on. I put a non-USA carb on it and it had headers and an older style of intake manifold w/no egr hole on it. I've already hooked the HAI back up and the dizzy advance per the diagram. The vent for the dizzy cap runs straight to the air cleaner so there is no VCV or gas filter, both BVSV's are gone and there is nothing left of the fuel tank vent system except the charcoal canister and the hard lines. The cat is gone and the wires for the thermo sensor are just hanging underneath. My primary concern is anything that would help w/cold weather operation, I do have a liquid heat riser kit for the intake I just haven't installed it yet. Any thoughts would be helpfull.

That's a lotta...

That's a lot of good work done, hell, i wish you were closer and you could take all of mine off for yours. Are you talking start up or operation. If its just starting hard up there, put in a freezeplug based block heater and call'er good

I don't want to put all the stuff back on, it's not required where I live, I just know some of it was installed on the non-USA rigs so it must have a purpose beyond just emmissions. The truck runs pretty good, it has some issues, like the headers are warped and it it has low to mid range lag that seems to get better when it warms up. I don't think putting any of the IM stuff back on will help that. It actually starts real good in the cold, just has to warm up for awhile.

HI

I have heard that there are many different ways to get photos on canvas. Some of the better versions are done in pop art style. I am thinking of getting a photo on canvas for my home and have seen photo to canvas prints that have a good Lichtenstein flavour. I want the picture to be their pet dog and wondered if anybody thought that a Lichtenstein print of a German Shepherd was too much? I don't think so but then that's just me.

Thanks
john

what the hell am I missing here- how does this pertain to smog/desmog?

Ok, that string wasn't very helpfull. Hey FJ40Jim, what would you put back on a rig where everything was removed? If I should make it match the desmog diagram I can do that, I just would like to know what the benefits would be.

Count your blessings!

Be grateful all that crap is gone. The fluid heatriser will help immensely. Run the coolant directly from the head to the heatriser, then on to the heater core. Utah isn't as cold as Alaska, but cold enough and the heatriser is, in my opinion, mandatory for cold weather (colder than 20F) operation. There is a reason that aircraft have warm air intakes, caburator icing can occur in ambient tempuratures as high as 40F due to the venturi effect of low pressure, low temperature.

If it's off and legal in your area, don't put it back on.

Send the distributor to JimC with the carb and have him complete your desmog. The distributor should the the advance recurved to run optimally without the EGR. The Carb is then changed as well to improve the fuel delivery. It will run like a champ with just ported vacuum to the distributor advance and no other engine controls.

You may need an idler pulley in place of the smog pump, ask Jim to know for sure. I think you will.

You will also want to remove the air rail and plug the holes.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the input guys :). I guess I'll leave it the way I got it now, the air rail is already gone and plugged off. I do need to figure out a way to lose the old smog pump and I will get the dizzy and carb done latter this summer, which up here means next week, I still got three feet of snow in the yard and winter will be back wat too soon!
