Going to the Junk-Yard, what to look for? (1 Viewer)

I'd stay away from junkyard coolers. They may contain debris from failed equipment and can be difficult to thoroughly flush.

thanks TRU

"Without a tank it takes 5 mins to fill from 10 PSI to 32 PSI."

so with 2 caddy compressors it would take ~20 min to fill all 4 tires, slow but cheap

Edit hmm also give on board air for air horns for next a****** that cuts me off on 285 :flipoff2:

figured kerosone soak and compressed air would take car of it, no?

Might, might not. Cooler may be in fine shape sitting in the junkyard. Is saving a few bucks over buying a new cooler worth the risk? You have to decide for yourself. I'm sure that there are others that have reused junk yard coolers.

For some US auto manufacturers for some models it is required for warrantied transmission replacements to replace external coolers with new and also install an inline transmission fluid filter to help take care of what may not have been succesfully flushed from the in radiator tank internal tranny cooler.

My advice to those of you considering the Caddy compressors is to design your system so that you can replace it with a real compressor at some time. Run 4ga or 6ga wire. The Caddy compressors draw approx 15 amps; a dual system draws 30 amps. Plan your relays and wiring for 60 amp.

Inspect and test the Caddy compressors when you get them home. I got 2 out of 3 to work reliably. Heat is an issue as they are not designed for continuous duty and 5 minutes to fill a tire is much longer than they were intended to run. They will pump to 150psi but those last 30 psi work the compressors extremely hard. Plan for a 120psi max on your tank (if you have one.)

The plumbing in the Caddy ELS systems is not usable for our application. The air tubes are very small and you'll find most have weathered and will fall apart when you touch the tube.

Other things to snatch when you pull the compressors are the relays (many Caddys had Hella relays) and the GM weatherproof connectors in the wiring harness.

Raven,

If you find any grey interiors, I'm looking for a third row left hand shoulder belt. I'm told a 2nd row shoulder belt is the same, so that would also work well - whichever's easiest to remove for ya. And if they happen to be a 93/94 - dibs on the center third row lapbelt, or again - a 2nd row center lapbelt out of any year would work. I'd be grateful.

Regards,

DougM

-B- Thanks for the info

Doug, Doubt I will find an 80 but if I do I will certainly grab those items. grey interior parts are useless for me.

if we're getting into grey interiors now, and it's not too much hassle, I could use the two plastic floor step pads between the 2nd and 3rd row and one of the strap hook ends that suspends the 2nd row when folding back (I have the main body of the strap). I would also pay up to say $25 for a decent set of floormats or $10 for just the front ones. I'd get it myself but there are no 80s in Canadian boneyards because they were never sold here.

good luck on your hunt!

Several pick and pulls off of buford hwy.

Went today

Sorry guys no 80’s

I did not find any Horns in good shape, found some interesting looking ones on a late 70's caddy very large with a drum shaped body. Also some large ones on a old 70's Mercedes they were not horn shaped they were more the disk like the stock ones, both were rusty.

Found 2 caddy compressors, both turn and blow air, have not tested them at pressure yet. They wanted $22.50 each. That was more than I was expecting. Almost turned around and put them back.

Don’t think I am going to hard to mount them into the 80 for right now, thinking about making a little portable until with the 2 compressors and a little tank that plugs in.
