Setting the backlash, well it was tricky.
The shaft we made is 2 piece, making it possible.
We just did it today.
I will try to clearly write this down here.

it is a front IFS 90 series prado differential.

backlash setting

To set the backlash on the shaft you will have to put chalk on the outer part of the shaft that goes into the piece that holds the ring gear.
Assemble everything, and turn the pinion but hold the winch shaft stil so it rubs.

take it appart and you will see the mark of where it sits when to tight.
take a feeler guage that you set backlashes with and move it away from the pinion.
weld it a little bit, assemble and check backlash, by hand.....
If done right you can take it appart and fully weld them together.

the backlash can also be set by shimming the bearing races.

Im interested to see what you build for a clutch, perhaps you can rob parts from an 8274 to do that, or build a safety like the 8274, but, if you have a manual safety and run it backwards by accident without releasing it, well I think we know it definatelty wouldnt last.

cody,

I have not done alot of work on it lately since I hace some engine probs.

Now I have the inner part of the drum made with the copper bushing pressed in.
We will slide 15 mm thick 12 in diameter flanges on, weld them on and lathe to 10mm.

make the locking mechanism, brakets, still alot to make, pics will come soon.

AN auto brake would be great but I have no idea where to start...

hi all,

im still working on the winch and wanted to share some pics of the build.

the winch has a new seal, the drum is made, the mounting brackets are done,
baclash is set, bearings are shimmed,
all the winch needs is gearoil and a unlocking mechanism on the part where the
drum locks to the shaft.

the drive shaft was made today, it uses the splined part anf the front yoke that bolts to the winch's pinion of a lj78 drive shaft,
the rear yoke is off a friend of mines truck (a heavy duty yoke to fit the pto.
the pipe is 48mm in diameter and has a wall thickness of 5 mm.

there is a stock winch drive shaft next to the new one for comparison.
the new one has no break pin....
It also does not have a pillow block, it gets very close to the oil pan and bellhousing though. about 5mm of space, maybe well put a nice dent in the pan and grind the bell housing if it rubs.

all I hope is that it is balanced enough and the welds hold.

some one just gave me the idea to use a tractor pto slipclutch as a safety. it seems like a good idea and there is space for it. a slip clutch of the proper strength should slip before cable or any other breaking of the various components.

will I do it, don't think so but hope this gives ideas to someone building something simular.

So the theory here is your PTO winch has way higher gearing than a worm-drive PTO, making the line speed incredibly high? But that also has the reverse effect of making it easier to stall the engine out, as is apparent from the videos on the really steep sections. Also, as was mentioned above, you don't have the worm drive gear to provide a brake, so the line will unspool almost as easily as it is run in.

Does GOD stand for anything, like PTO does? Or is it just the name given by the crazy Malaysians? :D

It is called SUN winch in chinese Cantonese which means GOD.

And yes they are quick and yes they are lethal if incorrectly used. SInce you have a diesel you can get away with pulling at 1000rom not 5000 like the petrol boys do.

Yes plasma will break with the SHOCK load thats why we use 11mm steel cable 60 meters will be a good start i'm putting 220 feet on my next cable.

When winching do not screw up start and stop correctly. Never let anyone grab the cable when winching in unless youcan see their hands. Never let them hold the cable only the hook or end eye. winch out in reverse do not freespool out. You cannot drive usually you winch only unless you have to climb a part withese the wheels cannot reach.

Late last year on a trip I pulled 10 cars in a row (into the camp and back out) with the GOD winch the people who had never seen it were stunned they saw the electric fail before I pulled the god winch cable out.

Take a pinch bar with you to free the cable it will pinch up inside the drum sometimes. Always have it ready to use never go one obstacle to the next without rewinding it. MAke sure your BAR has two hooks either side so you can pull back in itself to free up the cable when it pinches up.

What kind of PTO box will you use?
The standard toyota PTO that I have doesn't look that strong if one inteds to push full power through it.
Do you know what type of PTO box that the Malaysian guys use, as they push a lot power through their PTO boxes?

HI GEcko/Cicak,

How are you?

What do you mean by 2 hooks on the bar to pull the pinched cable out?

Here in Suriname, we call geckos, cicak also,
(it maybe pronounced a bit differently) like tjietjack
we have alot of indonesians here from the Island of Java.
They were brought as immigrants to plant in kolonial times.
I assume we got that word from their language.

the stock toyota pto box is what I am going to use on a H41 newerstyle split case.
it should be strong enough.
I have seen some hard pulls on youtube.

reverse winching downhill seems tricky, but I think in first gear at idle, the vehicle will roll down backweards gently.

plasma fails quicker on shock loads, good to know as In the beginning of the build I thought about using that......

We use STOCK PTO box's they kinda tough.

Winch video's coming from recent trip God vs 8274 vs RUNVA sometime next week been in the jungle for 10 days 4wding and kayaking so have so much video and pics to document stories for.

Reverse winching in reverse and idle down cannot use 1st and reverse.

Showing the difference in the Malaysian SUN (God) winch vs stock Runva two speed vs Runva standard vs WARN 8274 over the same 2 obstacles.

The D90 was on 33" sneakers the rest on 35" Sneakers.

The Blue Landcruiser Open diffs
RED landcruiser rear Locker and used only 2WD (4WD was broken on this trip) and does not drive during winching only winches usually at 1,000 or 1,200rpm.
D90 is stock CDL and so is D110.
