I have a hose that's slipping a bit and wondering what you guys would recommend gluing it on with. If it's permanent, that's OK. It's gluing onto that black plastic material like the heater valve is made of. Black RTV? 3M weatherstrip glue (which color?). Bear in mind no all rubber glues will withstand heat and coolant, so any experience with doing this would be good. I think it's a nonmetric rubber hose - new and will last a decade and by they the component it's glued to will be replaced.

Thanks for the collective wisdom in advance.

I would think that Black RVT would do it
I dont know the temp range of it

IIRC I once tried black RTV on a radiator hose and it's didn't help much, it's a good sealant but not much of an adhesive IME. Maybe one of the epoxy type adhesives?? Won't the clamp hold the hose on the nipple/pipe or is it one of those small hoses without clamps?

we had an issue on some of our heavy trucks were a rad hos was popping off. the final solution we used was to rough up the plastic neck and use some Indian shellac. Worked amazingly well.

constant torque clamps

True confession - this is on my Syncro which I just got on the road a few days ago (whew!...) and there is no nipple - a straight pipe with an eighth inch (and the nipple) missing. Figured the 80 guys would have a solution. It has a constant tension spring clamp on it and a new hose but it blew off 5 miles from home. The part will be replaced over the winter, so wanted to simply glue the hose to it so I can motor around a bit to see what else needs tending to over the winter.

What the heck is Indian shellac?

Still looking for a glue to glue a heater hose onto a plastic fitting. Permanently.

80 content: Wish I were in the 80, cause it's no fun standing on the road with a hippy van and I could have been breezing on home in the 80...

I work for NAPA and we do have some stuff that will take care of it, head down to the local store and talk to a counter guy. If they don't let know and I will get you part number of what you need and have them order it.

1/8", like tiny? like radiator overflow size hose?

if you have enough length, drill a small hole, (two 180deg out if possible) put a small (appropriate size for the hole drilled) stainless screw in, grind the screw heads down enough to slip the hose on and clamp it down.

edit: What's a syncro?

If you are talking about the ridge on the end of the fitting, that is what holds the hose on. Without it, the hose isn't going to reliably stay on. Indian Head may work would be a good first try? Another :hillbilly: fix that I have had some success with: Wrap thin wire around the clamp in a couple of places, tighten the clamp in place, then tie the wires to something close to prevent the hose moving.

That is part of the "VW thing", keep at it you may eventually understand? I don't think they were ever intended to be relied on for reliable transportation?:hillbilly:

Couple good ideas. Interesting I stopped at NAPA on my way home this morning and the counter guy indeed had a suggestion. It had an old fashioned label and was a watery rubber sealant you could also use for belt dressing. One of those integerated lid with brush things. We discussed a product I have on hand from Germany I used to seal the rubber head seals onto the engine a month ago and he judged it perfect for what I want to do with the hose. Like the safety wire addition - good call! Will also do that.

Yeah, this seems like a vehicle you treat a mere road trip in the same way you'd treat a serious offroad trip in the Cruiser. Spare parts and tools just for road driving.

Gasgacinch.

This stuff is awesome.

Careful torquing down too much on a HD clamp. You might shatter the plastic nipple. I would use PVC pipe adhesieve and a clamp. It will hold PVC hot water pipe at 140F+ in a home without leaking... I know the rad temps are higher, but it's some decent stuff and should adhere well.
