I was working on my fuel pump and found that I have a glass bowl type fuel filter on my July 1977 truck.

I didn't think anything of it until I started looking into getting a new filter element for it and found that all of the elements were listed as fitting up to the 1970 model year.

Now I think I have this figured out, but I just want confirmation. It seems that the PO must ahve installed this filter because from the parts diagrams for my 77 there should be a metal filter there.

Here is a pic of how this filter is installed, I'm wondering if the original filter connected where the two arrows are. Does anyone have pics of an original metal filter on their 77ish truck?

I don't. Sorry.

On my '68 that filter's bracket is bolted to the aft side of the battery tray "pedestal". It looks like your tray is missing there.

You could just go get an inline filter at the local parts store and install it where those arrows are I would think. I kinda like the replaceable element style myself. For no other reason than that they look cool :meh:

Yours looks different. On mine the aluminum cap has a stepped art-deco sort of profile.

Thanks FishTacos.

I have no issue with the filter itself. I just want to confirm that it is from an earlier model. One day when the restore happens I would like to put it back to original as possible so as I find questionable things like this I try to get it sorted out.

I went out and looked closer because I thought that I might not even have a Toyota filter, but it is a Kyosan filter.

After moving some hoses and wires I believe I found the original bracket for the fuel filter and it matches the EPC diagram. So I am sure that this is not an original filter (another telltale is the mismatched bolts holding it to the fender) but I agree that it is cool. I wish it was the original filter!

Still would love to see a photo of the original filter for a 77 if anyone has one.

Thanks thorslc1977. Thanks a lot for the pics.

That's what I was expecting. Now I gotta search for a metal fuel filter. I think the new ones from Toyota are now plastic.

I'll keep the glass one until then.

Just curious, have you not changed the fuel filter since 1977?

Ha Ha it does look like **** (desert/dusty roads make under hood/under carriage look filthy) but it flows fine. I have never rebuilt my carb ; truck runs like a top; just passed cali smog laws and I have never had any fuel starvation issues I believe that is my fourth or fifth one through the years and now that you have shamed me it looks like I'm going down to get number 6 --- Just dirty on the underside

Was wondering because it still looks original and I thought that I saw that the OEM now available was made of plasitic.

Rig looks awesome though. Very nice.

Thanks that is my baby -- been better to me than two ex-wives. That one ( filter) is probably close to ten years old I will order one from Cdan or Beno and we will see what they send us. Will keep the old one for a trail spare
